Cupcake War Crimes, Take 2, Thursday [8/11]

Things looked normal in the Home Ec classroom this week. Hopefully even your TA was fully recovered from her bout of greyness. None of this week’s cupcakes were grey either, though you wouldn’t be able to tell that yet since they were all still covered.

"I hope everyone is well," Stark said, looking over the students after they arrived. "Recovered from last week. Everything that happened. And if there’s anything we can help with," yes, he was volunteering Anders for support services too, "please, let us." If nothing else, you know these two will offer baked goods.

Anders gave Stark a surprised look for just a second, but he was all right with being volunteered, he supposed. "And I’m just gonna throw this out there so you know before trying it yourselves in a situation. If you’re gonna use old stale cupcakes as a weapon, aim carefully, and be ready to run if they decide your ammo’s tasty." He cleared his throat and uncovered a large tray of chocolate-based cupcakes. "These are -- tasty in theory, but maybe the idea that chocolate makes everything better ain’t all it’s cracked up to be. What do you guys think?"

To be fair, the dark chocolate cupcake with the caramel cumin buttercream frosting looked pretty good, and the maple syrup cupcake with brown sugar smoked bacon . . . well, bacon did make everything better, right? On the other hand, there was that chocolate cupcake coated in potato chips, and the one with the jalapeno on top. It was really a mixed bag -- or plate, more accurately.

"Chocolate or bacon," Anders went on, snagging one of the maple syrup and bacon cupcakes for himself. "That’s your discussion for the day, and there’s plenty of both in with the ingredients when you get to baking."

Sam still didn't know how to cook but he was gonna try and combine two things he did like today: chocolate and Cheerios. It'd probably come out badly but wasn't the class about learning and being creative?

Now, he just had to figure out if he wanted to stick the Cheerios on top of the chocolate frosting or use them as the filling. Maybe he'd do both. The more Cheerios, the better.

She has! Physically, at least. And she's looking forward to glomping Professor Stark after class for making her feel so much better not-physically at the clinic.

Meanwhile, she's wondering why anyone would enjoy bacon in a cupcake. ANYone. And being very frustrated that today's examples all looked so tasty, despite the ingredients.

Despite everything, Momoko had to try the chocolate covered potato chip cupcake. She was VERY upset to find it good, and her shoulders drooped.

The salt and grease of the chips were balanced out very nicely by the depth of the chocolate and the sweetness was actually complemented by the texture break that the rolled crumbs added.

She frowned and reached for one with a jalapeno on top. Surely they all couldn't be tasty.

"Cheerios? Really? Could you at least, I don't know, coat them in chocolate or powdered sugar or something?" Mercy was looking a bit dubious here.

Mercy had decided to take a page from her favorite kind of hot chocolate and add some aztec spiciness to a chocolate fudge filling.

"If bacon can go in a cupcake, so can Cheerios," Sam reasoned logically. The powdered sugar wasn't a bad idea. "It'll keep them healthy. Ish."

"Aren't cupcakes, sort of by definition unhealthy?" Mercy asked with a smile. She finished whisking up her filling and gave it a taste. "Oh, yes, that's what I wanted."

"Are they?" Sam shrugged carelessly. "I dunno, I'm a vegetarian and I've figured out how to make that lifestyle unhealthy. It's all relative. Healthy things can be unhealthy and unhealthy things can be healthy. Labels are too confining."

She thought about that for a moment as she poured batter. "I don't think I could be a vegetarian." Certainly the coyote part of her wasn't about to switch. "But yeah, sure anything can be unhealthy. Now, I'm not sure you could make say, deep fried twinkies healthy, but..."

"No, some things aren't gonna be healthy no matter how hard you try," Sam agreed, tossing some Cheerios onto the top of his cupcake to see how they looked. "If you wanna be healthy with deep fried Twinkies, you just don't eat it."

"They've never actually appealed to me," Mercy admitted. "Brownies now - oh... Next time I should try a brownie cupcake!"

Stark eyed the apple and brie cupcake a little warily, the jalapeno one even moreso. And the mustard one was right out. The potato chip one seemed only mildly alarming so he took a few experimental nibbles from one of those. He wasn't sure about the bits of potato chip that it was rolled in, but the chocolate covered chips were tasty at least. But it wasn't the sort of cupcake he would be seeking out again any time soon.

Brownie cupcake?" Sam asked, deciding he could be dubious this time. "Why combine two good things into one? Two's always better than one when it comes to sweets. You can rot your teeth outta your head faster too."

"Why not? You can always eat two brownie cupcakes if you're in that much of a hurry." She was already thinking about how to go about it - maybe some whoopie pie type filling for frosting - or a filling itself. These could be good!

Miley was enjoying the bacon thing. What was wrong with mixing chocolate and bacon? They were, like, two of the best things ever.
