Computers 101, 1st Period [Friday]

Sam looked a little sad today as everyone took their seats at the computers. "So, it's our last day together, and that means that technically, we're supposed to have a final. But, it's also the summer, so a real final seems kind of mean. I figured we could go for the easy route instead: start the computers up, and show me something that you learned how to do in the last few weeks here. It'll be easy for you, and interesting for me," he said. "You guys have been a great class, and I'm really glad you all signed up to be here." Yes, even you, Topher.

Topher Brink

Bod thought he'd learned plenty. He decided to look up canines on the Wikipedia site and, specifically, went looking for information on beagles. Once that was done, he flipped over to a video playing site and found a cute video of a beagle.

So, that was what he showed Sam. No one could resist a cute puppy.

Caroline Forbes

Caroline was sorry to be done with this class. It was easy and the professor had been great eye candy; what's not to love?

"I learned how to find seriously adorable animals on the internet," she said when it was her turn to share. "Behold my new ability to search flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/she-wolf92/3352407545/) and not end up with seriously creepy porn."

Rilla Blythe

"I found out that some people can buy clothing online!" Rilla exclaimed. "But not me because I don't have a credit card."

It was probably better that way.

Surreal

"I learned, uh."

Topher was coming up empty here. Until --

"Oh, I learned some new proxies to get around the school blocks!"

Sam definitely couldn't resist a cute puppy, and he had to fight to not make an embarrassing noise when he looked at Bod's computer. "Awesome choice," he said. "Definitely a good use of the internet, always."

Sam laughed. "Getting animals without getting porn is definitely a good skill," he said. "I hope you find that useful in the future when you need an adorable pick-me-up."

Faramir

"Considering that I had not been familiar with computers before, I would say that I have learned much," Faramir said. "Admittedly, I still do not comprehend half of the uses, but I can see that it is a great tool with much uses."

"Well, if you ever get a credit card, you'll be all ready to shop," Sam said. He was so helpful sometimes.

Sam looked at Topher for a moment, then grabbed a piece of paper and wrote down his cellphone number. "If you ever, I don't know, get into trouble and need someone on the outside to help you out, give me a call, okay? I promise, I won't ask too many questions."

"I've tried telling my father that but he says that the line of credit at Flagg's General Store should be good enough," Rilla said. "Maybe you could write me a letter of recommendation?"

Good luck there, Rilla.

"That's really good to hear," Sam said with a smile. "Better than you deciding that computers are terrible and no one should ever use them."

"I would lie if I did not admit that I much prefer holding a book in my hands than staring at a screen," he said, "but it is powerful. Holding so much knowledge in such a small thing." Compared to a whole library, either way.

"I don't know, I think maybe your dad would know best," Sam said. The last thing he needed was to get into trouble with parents. "And if you bought stuff online, you'd have to bring it all home at some point." That was discouraging, right?

"Oh, books are definitely good, especially old ones that have that great smell," Sam said. "I spent way too much time working in the library to deny that. I think I need books and computers both to get by."

"I fear your computer would not work in my world, so I will have to settle for books," he chuckled. "Or scrolls. There are many in the King's archives."

"As long as you have the information you want, then scrolls are fine. That's all that matters, as far as I'm concerned," Sam said.

Seifer Almasy

"I learned, there is some sick and disgusting stuff on the internet in this universe."

No, he wasn't pulling up those sites again. Not for anything.

Sam did his best not to snicker, and gave Seifer a sympathetic look. "Yeah, you're right, there's some really bad stuff out there. But I swear it's not all sick. There are some nice, redeeming things on the internet, if you look for them."

...

"Ooookay," Topher said, quirking an eyebrow. Nope, he wasn't going to give Sam's offer a second thought. Which was a shame, because it was so nice. Such was Topher.

Bobby McCallister

Bobby was going to miss this class. It was so interesting to see how Mr. - Sam taught stuff and there was a lot he could learn! But it would be better if no one patted him on the head. Nearly-sophomore's had easily-injured senses of dignity.
