Life's a Circus, Friday, Second Period

"Sometimes in life, all it comes down to is whether you want to do something risky that could be incredibly rewarding or play it safe and don't do that risky thing because, honestly, it's probably insane," Dick said. "And in the circus, we have specialists called lion tamers who basically train lions to not attack or eat them."

Dick hit a button on the Danger Shop remote and a lion approached him. "The signature trick of the lion tamer is to stick their head in the lion's mouth. When you have the lion trained to the point where he'll keep his mouth open long enough without deciding you look tasty, you're probably not in too much danger. But you still have to face a mouth full of sharp teeth, powerful jaws, and the knowledge that you could potentially lose your life in an instant."

The lion opened his mouth wide, and Dick bent down, sticking his head into the mouth for several seconds before stepping back and letting the lion close its mouth. "So, do you take the chance to do something few people are bold enough to do? Or do you reasonably play it safe and just take it easy today? At this point you're either in the circus or you're in the audience. This final will decide that where you are."

The way Stephanie figured it, sticking her head in a lion's mouth was loads less scary than the prospect of walking down the street in Gotham in broad daylight on a normal day (as opposed to, say, one where a giant earthquake just happened to break open all the prisons in the city, or something along those lines).

Plus she'd turned into more than a little bit of an adrenaline junkie.

"Good kitty. Good kitty," she muttered as she took up a position in front of the lion. "Now, how about opening up and saying 'aaaah' for me, will y -- wow, it should not be unnerving to have someone actually do what you say."

And now that she saw it up close, oh, boy, that was a lot of sharp teeth.

But screw it -- she took a deep breath (headvoiceheadvoiceheadvoicekeephalitosiscrackstotheheadvoiceStephPLEASE) and stuck her head in the lion's mouth ('course, if he bites off your head, the head voice thing won't be a problem OH GOD WHY AM I THINKING THIS) for as long as it took to, well, mentally run through several slightly panicky scenarios, one of which was extra panicky just because the lion had to go and thump his tail.

Or count to five. She could have been counting to five. Slowly.

Stephanie totally did a two-handed victory fistpump as soon as she was well away from the lion again, though. "I could totally do that again."

Freddie hesitated for a moment, then wen and sat in the audience. The only way he was sticking his head in a lion's mouth was if Sam grabbed him and forced him to do so.

Sam considered grabbing Freddie and shoving his head into the lion's mouth, but, well, she'd managed not to end up in detention so far, and she didn't want to ruin that record on the last day of classes for the session.

She gave the lion a narrow-eyed look as she approached. "You eat me, dude, I will eat you back."

What? It wasn't like the lion could tell that didn't make sense.

"Well, come on, what are you waiting for? Open your mouth." The lion gave her a narrow-eyed look in return, then seemed to roll its eyes as it opened its mouth wide enough to accommodate Sam's head. Sam stuck her head in, held her arms up in a "tada!" gesture, then straightened back up. She looked at the lion consideringly.

"How'd you like to be an internet sensation?"

She might not have entirely grasped the "things in the danger shop aren't real" concept, yet. Despite the illusory ham incident.

Juliet decided to go for it with the lion. "Nice kitty," she told it, and then -- very very very slowly, very very very carefully -- put her head between its jaws for almost one-half of a second.

The moment the lipon twitched, she was out of there, but she was beaming.

Thrill-seeking was one thing. This was just kind of crazy. Richie headed for the audience, where nothing was likely to bite off his head. Right?

And this way he could call back to Seacouver and tell Mac and Tessa that he'd spent his class today not sticking his head in a lion's mouth. He figured they'd like that.

There was staring from Annie. She didn't care if this was all simulated. No. No. Nope. No.

Audience! Definitely the audience! Annie would just be here, watching anyone else through her fingers.

Mercy'd heard enough about the Danger Shop to know there was little danger of being injured. Plus, the odds that the teachers would let the students be eaten by lions wasn't great. So, she was fairly confident when she approached the lion, treating it as she would an alpha wolf, and after a little coaxing, stuck her head in its mouth.

And was very grateful for having been right about it being safe.
