The final was taking place in the Danger Shop today. The door to the Shop opened into a decent-sized studio apartment, but from the windows, an entire cityscape could be seen. "Welcome to the last class," Cindy said, giving them all a smile. "You've been a great class and I hope some of what we've learned this semester has been useful to you and will continue to be so for as long as you stay at Fandom. Our final today is a practical, so don't worry about notes or essays or anything like that. This is a class with real-world applications, so it only makes sense to test it in a real-world setting."

Well, as 'real world' as people get in the Danger Shop.

"Your exam is going to be pretty simple. You're going to spend an evening with a friend, including cooking them dinner here in your apartment." She pointed to the kitchen, complete there was a sink, a fridge, a tiny stove, a dishwasher, and a microwave oven. "You must plan out and execute the entire evening, starting with contacting your friend, going to the store for the meal, figuring out an activity, and making sure your apartment is ready for company." With the touch of a button, the apartment became rather messy, with dishes piling in the sink, dirty carpets, and a pile of laundry. "You also want to stay under budget," Cindy said, handing out a plastic "credit" card to each of them. "There's $50 on each of these," she explained. "So you're going to be limited in what you can do. Take a taxi somewhere, and you'll be limited to making ramen for dinner. Cook an extravagant meal, and you'll need to stay in and watch movies tonight. Either of those options are fine--it can be a very cheap night of ramen and DVDs--just make sure you keep your budget in mind when you're planning your evening."

She went over to the door to the apartment and opened it. "There are identical apartments for all of you, so scatter and start figuring out what you're doing tonight."

Some things to keep in mind:
*The apartments are out of walking distance of anything, though there are convenient taxis, subways, and buses. Taxis are expensive, buses and subways require using the ~~moddable~~ maps and schedules to get to where you want to go (store, various activities).

*The more information and tech you use from the 21st century, the higher your grade will be.

*Cindy is not going to be grading you based on the quality of your meal, so no worries if you can't cook.

Be glad she didn't include a "safer sex" component to the final!

Warren bit his lip before planning out his evening. Fifty dollars? Meant a phone call to get in touch with said friend. Transportation was free, if you could fly. After all, what did walking distance matter, if you could wing it across the city faster than stoplights would allow for?

Cleaning was... Special. If he just shoved the dirty laundry into the closet, then he didn't have to worry too much about that, for the time being. The dishes and the vacuuming weren't so bad, anyhow. At least he knew how to run the appliances, so, gold star for him right there.

As for the food... Oh, man. Ordering out for pizza. It was the most expensive chunk of the evening, but he didn't trust himself anywhere near the stove. Ever.

And then some DVD rental or other. Still well under budget. And he'd even keep the receipts.

E-mail communications would work for any friend Cally had on this planet, and cost nothing. (Rather literally nothing, since her datapad was tapped into a local satellite network without actually paying for the privilege. Which... was sort of cheating because it wasn't 21st Century technology, but it was nothing that couldn't be done with 21st Century technology.)

The bus was fine, and the datapad could also serve as a geolocator, so finding her way would hardly be a problem. Food... well, she knew how to make mashed potatoes and swedish meatballs in theory, but perhaps she'd better buy the boxed and frozen sort and make at least the meatballs in the microwave.

Cleaning was no problem, though any real flat she had would probably choke a vacuum cleaner with all the dog hair. As for after dinner, there were several entertainment options she could think of which cost nothing at all... Get your mind out of the gutter.

Mister What marathon! For some reason the technology on that programme reminded her of home...
