Getting Out of Tight Situations- Period 5

Today when everyone got to class, they'd find themselves in a hangar, in front of a small airplane. "Glad to see everyone's back to their right ages," Jaina said with a smile, because she loved those weekends. "Today, you're going to do one of my favorite things. You're going to fly. Now, some of you might recognize this sort of plane, some of you might not. I'm going to bet none of you have been in the cockpit of one, though, and that should even things out a bit for all of you. The pilot's incapacitated, and you get to try and land the plane safely. If by some chance you're unable to do so, the simulation will end, so no one has to deal with that sort of trauma. Now, if for some reason you're not comfortable with this, that's fine. It's the last class, I'm not changing your grade if you sit out.

"And because it's the last class," she went on, "I want to thank you guys for being a great class. Hopefully you've learned something in the last few months, and it's been great teaching you all."

If Bobby looked slightly nervous about the premise of the final, it was not because he'd never flown a plane before. Rather, it was because he had. Granted, the X-Jet's controls were a little more sophisticated than this particular setup, but it was the same basic principle. The problem was that, well. Like Jaina had said, it wasn't exactly the sort of experience your average teenager was familiar with.

Ender was sitting back. He wasn't too fussed - it wasn't like this was a combat sim.

He may miss you, but he's not going to make a big deal about it. Or a small deal. Look, he still has to see most of you for another year.

Between the flight class last summer and some personal lessons he'd taken, Bruce was fairly confident in his abilities here. And even if he couldn't, he knew how to skydive. Yes, even bringing an unconscious person with him. His training was very thorough.

Climbing walls and running across rooftops had eliminated most of the squire's fear of heights. He was a bit pale and nervous, chewing a fingernail. This? This was something new. He reminded himself that this was only technology magic, not real.

Oh. Flying a plane. Well. Stephanie wasn't falling all over herself with excitement about that.

Except for how internally she totally was, hi. Even if it wasn't the Batplane, at least someone was going to let her get the chance to try flying. Sheesh! It wasn't like she was going to break the thing.

But then again, this was internal squee. Because after all -- the average ordinary teen she was supposed to be shouldn't be approaching it that way, right?

. . . okay, she looked a little intimidated, and that wasn't faking it. The prospect, while exciting, came with a healthy dose of genuine eeeeeeeeep.

The whole flying a pain thing was cool. Would have been cool if it wasn't frigging crashing and this was sort of a situation where none of his abilities helped him out any.

So after some aimless attempts to get the plane to stay level, Jake somehow managed to get the frigging thing spiralling towards the earth. Which was in itself kind of cool, if not nauseating.

Oh well. Explosions were fun? He should have just aimed for the mountain.

Land an airplane by herself? Harper's palms were starting to sweat just listening to the setup.

Ben was aiming the plane for the field, all the while muttering to himself about antiquated technology and making that woman back in coach stop screaming before he went back there and yelled at her while flying the plane.

Re: Talk to Jaina

Triela approached Jaina a little bit hesitantly. "I'm... not sure I feel comfortable flying. Even in simulation." She managed an awkward little smile. "I'm not really at my best." Bouts of dizziness and flying didn't really go that well together.

"Sorry," Triela said again, even though she knew it was unnecessary. "I'm just feeling a bit... dizzy. So..." Yeah.

"Thank you for the course, though."

Bruce took control of the plane easily and, with orders from control, managed a fairly smooth landing in a field.
