Ethics [Thursday, February 10, 1st period]

"You stay there in that corner and don't hug me," Anakin was saying, shaking his finger at a small monkey as the students arrived.

He looked a little embarrassed to see them. "It seems Fandom has struck again," he said a little dryly. "The...affection...of these monkeys dovetails nicely into our discussion today of love, an emotion so beloved by portions of this planet that there is a holiday devoted to it. Now the chalky candies, the dance, the cards and the...monkeys--" which were new, but Force forbid Anakin not pretend he knew exactly what he was talking about, "--combine to push many people into thinking that this holiday is devoted exclusively to romantic love, but there are many other kinds to discuss: familiar love, love of a particular place or thing, love of an ideal..."

The monkey began to creep towards Anakin's leg and was stopped with a glare. "Now for Jedi in my day, love was forbidden: attachment was considered very dangerous for a group of beings with the kinds of powers that we wield. This has changed for the generations of Jedi who have followed me, many of whom are even joined to another Jedi. My questions for you are thus: why do you think the Order in my time wanted to forbid attachment, and what definition of love are you most familiar with." He smiled. "And I know teenagers worry about this sort of thing, but if you haven't been in love just yet, I assure you that there is nothing wrong with you."

Because clearly hearing that from Anakin Skywalker will ease their minds or something. "Let's begin."

Fend off a monkey! Wonder what the Jedi were thinking! Fret that you don't have a date to the dance tomorrow!

Why do you think the Jedi tried to forbid the Order from feeling attachment? Or the less fraught what kind of love are you familiar with?

Don't count on him talking back.

He loves to make smalltalk. Well, maybe not, but he's still there to talk.

Which didn't mean she couldn't see the benefits.

"My whole life for the last year is a big demonstration that romantic love complicates things," Katniss replied. "You can sway sympathies if people believe you're in love, and your judgment's impaired if you are." Yes, Peeta, your judgment sucks. "It's less complicated to...not."

"Less so than you'd think," Anakin said. "Most Jedi were taken to the Temple when they were just toddlers. A love and an attachment to the galaxy at large was encouraged, but nothing more personal than that."

Anakin nodded. "Though it's more complicated to pretend something you don't feel," he added.

Lindsay Weir

Lindsay was actually okay with not having a date to the dance. No fretting here! At least not much. Maybe a little.

Peter Bishop

"It seems to me like the Jedi wanted people to be able to remain impartial," Peter said. "And the idea being that with attachment and investment in certain people, you'd no longer be putting the Order's interests first."

"Did you have a bunch of people just sort of give up when they hit puberty?" Quinn wondered. "'Cause that's what I saw, with celibacy groups."

Anakin nodded. "Precisely, though we never couched it in terms of the needs of the Order. The Order didn't have needs. We served the galaxy as a whole, and justice."

Anakin shook his head. "Leaving the Order was so rare that as apprentices we learned the name of every Jedi who did so."

"But the Order decided what was just and what was best for the galaxy, I'm guessing?" Peter said.

If Peter had been Force-sensitive, he'd have almost been a Sith of Smugness.

"There must have been a lot of redirected energy," Quinn decided. "Or else guilt."

"Mostly redirected energy," Anakin said with a smile. "Teenagers aren't generally that focused on learning meditation techniques."

Anakin gave him a flat look. "Of course not. We weren't that arrogant."

Jack McCallister

The old Jedi sounded like monks. Cheesy monks. Some might even say cheddar monks. Jack, however, was busier looking at his teacher in a new light now that he'd been on a three minute date with the guy's daughter.

Peter looked surprised. "Huh. Guess I just sort of normally distrust any organization that tries to police anything so big. Though now I'd worry about who gave them orders."

"The Jedi Council tried to steer things a bit, but after what amounted to more than 20 years of training for each Jedi, they generally assumed you knew what you were doing when you were out on a diplomatic or military-based mission."

And that hadn't bit them in the ass in a major way at all. Really.

"Wait, so people got twenty years of training and then got to make their own decision about things?" Peter said, his head tilted. "Okay then."

"You were heavily supervised the first fifteen years or so," Anakin added.

"I mean, I'm sure there's a lot of vetting in the selection process," Peter said. "But free rein for supercops is a little scary, to me."

Anakin shrugged a shoulder. "The alternative--supercops being ruled by a government which might not have the best interests of its citizens in mind--is much less appealing to me. The Jedi were trusted as honest for a thousand generations because we were impartial."

"So... how many of them went rogue?" Peter said. "I mean, even here on Earth we have issues with spies and black ops people going off the deep end. Were they caught and stopped quickly?"

"In the very rare event that happened," Anakin said pointedly, "yes."
