Being a Proper Sea Dog, Friday, Period 3 [Session 5]

Today's class met again on Hook's special simulated ship in the Danger Shop.

He looked positively pleased as peach today, as he tweaked the end of his mustache with his hand while the class gathered.

"Today we will discuss the various methods that are used to discipline unruly and mutinous sailors at sea," Hook said, looking like he enjoyed the subject all too well.

"While you can see the plank off the starboard bow, it is not used as often as you'd think. After all, the discipline is rather... final."

He laughed, thinking this hilarious.

"There's the whip, of course, lashes across the back. Some rather enjoy it, so I hear. There's even special whips with multiple lashes to increase the effectiveness. And the crack of a whip, of course, has a very intimidating sound. We will not, however, be whipping each other in class. I do have to draw the line somewhere."

He then gestured to a chest on the deck, which seems to have a hatch installed in it.

"This is my personal favorite, and an invention of mine. It's called the boo box. The poor soul who thought it good to question my orders is placed inside, then we open the little hatch and drop in various things and say 'boo'!"

He laughed again, today being a rather mirthful class for him.

"Usually various things included scorpions, spiders, rats, and sometimes worse. Depending on what they did, of course. Always make sure the punishment suits the crime, after all!"

He then gestured to a large pile of potatoes that was behind the students, surrounded by basins, benches, and a plethora of potato peelers.

"Today you'll all engage in that old chestnut, peeling potatoes as punishment. Not that you've done anything wrong, but just as an example of course. I can't go about whipping you or making you walk the plank, after all. However, if anyone can come up with a suitably proper punishment that was not discussed today, and propose it to the class, you will not have to peel potatoes and can instead enjoy a relaxing bit of sunbathing under our simulated sun, accompanied by tropical juice drinks. While watching your friends toil away at peeling potatoes. Right, right, there we go. Peel some potatoes, like good students, like good students indeed."

He'd have clapped to get them to go, but obviously he could not.

[ooc: OCD first, plz Class is up and ready to go!]

Hook's ideas of punishment confused Kyle to no end. The Boo Box sounded more like torture, which he was learning was more commonly accepted at home than he expected.

"I have a question," Kyle said. "Why is this punishment?" He gestured to the potato in his hand.

The examples of discipline didn't really surprise Percy. The Boo Box even sounded creative in a messed up sort of way. That didn't mean he wanted to experience it though. He was just fine going without.

Percy reached for a potato and a peeler and started in on the potatoes while he thought about other punishments. He didn't want to approach Captain Hook without a solid idea.

He was pretty sure that way would just get him laughed at.

Whips and a box certainly grabbed and held Nico's attention this week, even if his mind started drifting a little with his own ideas of examples of how these tortures worked.

Luke knew his Greek history and he was just glad that Hook's punishments didn't involve being turned into an animal and having hunters be sent after you and stuff like that. That stuff was brutal.

Luke didn't really mind manual labor, even if it did mean he was gonna smell like a french fry for the rest of the day. He didn't even really want to think about punishments since that sort of led down the line of thinking of what Kronos would do to him if he screwed up this whole theft thing.

He was just lucky he didn't cut his hand off while thinking about this stuff.

Though he might have gotten extra credit for the dedication to the class.

"I know you can't cut off someone's leg as punishment," Luke started after he had spent about five minutes peeling potatoes. "But you could make an annoying student wear a peg leg for a while. That way you get the amusement of watching them hobble around on the boat while also teaching them the lesson about how difficult the life of a pirate was."

Luke smirked. "Not at all. I'm saying you should mock people who are too weak to overcome such a trial. It takes a special person to be able to put up with something like that without crying every five minutes."

He shrugged. "I know quite a few people who have lost an eyeball or a limb due to a fight. I'm lucky I only got away with a scar on my face."
