Science is Awesome!!!, Class #5, Period 3, February 1st

Class today was meeting in the Danger Shop, which had been converted to a botanical garden -- open walkways, ponds, trees, and lush plant life peeking out from every corner. As for the teacher herself, Rikku seemed a little more tired than her usual, but she was still smiling, if not bouncy.

"Hey, welcome back," she said. "This week, we're doing a little more showing than telling. I hope that's okay. The subject we're gonna cover is botany, but I'm only gonna give you a quick overview of it, before I let you run loose here."

There weren't any experiments or anything, but taking in a botanical garden seemed like it was important enough to count as a class activity, anyway.

"Okay, botany is the study of plants, which means it's a sub-topic of biology, since that's all living creatures. Plants are way more important than people even realize. They give us food, either directly or indirectly -- I mean, if you're eating a steak, that's a cow, but the cow was fed on grass. They also can be used as medicine, or fuel, or even woven to make fabric. And studying them sometimes lets us understand animal life better, too.

"Plants take in energy in the form of sunlight, via something called photosynthesis, and by water, which they get by putting roots into the ground. Plants also have grown in ways that can be adaptive of their environments. I mean, in the desert, you get cacti, which can save up water over long periods of time, and which have prickles so predators stay away. There's also a plant known as the 'corpse flower' which gives off a scent like rotting meat. Why? So they can lure flies and beetles in for pollination. Plants are way smarter than they look, although as far as I know they're not sentient or anything."

Unless you were talking about Ochus, but those weren't so much plants as monsters that kind of looked like plants, so that was probably off-topic.

"I grew up in a dessert, so for most of the plants we grew, we used hydroponics -- it's a way to grow plants in water and mineral solutions, without using soil. It's really fascinating, but it's kinda technical for this class, so instead I'm just going to say, let's all go take a long walk in the gardens. Everything here is labeled, and you don't have to stick together or anything ... just wander off and find something pretty to look at. Maybe that's not very scientific, but sometimes you just need to appreciate nature, you know?"

Even artificially-created nature that came from the Danger Shop. Shhh.

Rikku smiled at her students. "If you have any questions, or want to learn more, you can come pester me while we're walking around, or talk to me after class. Otherwise, enjoy."

If you did ask him, you were likely to get a discussion about the propogation of new plant species via crossbreeding, cause that's just how he rolled.

"Sentient plants suck," Hank told Rikku helpfully. "But luckily they burn pretty well. I mean, if you've stolen treasure from them and they're chasing you or something."

Hank was one of those people for whom Fandom was often less weird than his normal life.

Hank occupied himself by reading off the scientific name of each plant in a mocking tone of voice.

"...So which one's the stupidia dorkensis? These are all nerd plants!!!"

Lindsay wandered the garden, admiring the pretty landscaping and the trees. But it was the Japanese garden that had most of her attention.

Juliet adored gardens. She spent several minutes just cooing over the orchids. They were so perfect!

Momoko changed her pace trying to walk alongside Rikku. "Hi! This is a totally awesome class. Thanks, Rikku! It's been forever since I've been in a garden and I totally needed it."

She was going to build up to asking how Rikku was doing, personally.

"So, how's your week been?" Or maybe not.

"What? Do I have something on my face?"

"You stole treasure from a sentient plant and then burned the plant because it was chasing you for robbing it?"

Re: During the Lecture - SCI05

[identity profile] i-am-the-rat.livejournal.com 2011-02-02 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
... But that was how adventures went. There were always exotic tribes guarding treasures in temples in the middle of the jungle, and they were always badguys.

"Hey, they TOTALLY started it!" Hank insisted. In a manner of speaking. "Besides, they were going to sacrifice my brother to their statue-thing!"
heromaniac: (eh-heh nudge)

Oh, it wasn't the scenario that bothered Momoko. She's just met some sentient plants.

She raised an eyebrow and folded her arms. "Okay, and what did your brother do that made them decide to sacrifice him?" Because she totally did not believe anyone who would rob and murder a plant had a brother innocent enough to be a real sacrifice.
heromaniac: (hello door)

Momoko noticed Rikku wasn't her bouncy self, but she decided to spend a few minutes clearing her own head by walking about a bit before she approached her.

Ahh, it was so pretty and calming.

"I don't know," Hank insisted. "None of us spoke their weird language! It was probably something about outsiders not being allowed in their village, or touching something sacred, or accidentally doing something insulting, or something like that! Native tribes are always doing annoying stuff like that."
heromaniac: (?! eh)

"..." Maybe he just needed it explained to him? in small words

"You invaded a foreign village, insulted them, totally disrespected their religion, and stole their treasure," Momoko calmly counted off on her fingers. "And when they chased you to get it back, you thought it was okay to burn them?"

heromaniac: (ehhh yeah)

More staring.

"You do know that 'Illinois Smith' is a movie, right? Stealing from people is totally not the way museums get stuff." anymore "It's illegal and that totally makes you the bad guys."

"Totally stealing. If you were studying them, you'd totally have tried to learn their language and respect their religion." Momoko resisted the urge to stick her tongue out at him.

... okay, no she didn't.
heromaniac: (sad leery)

Momoko's hug went from automatic to tight and emotional in seconds. Hopefully the older girl wasn't easily crushed.

"You did?" she whispered back, both pride and heartache still clear in Momoko's voice. "You actually saw Home? Oh, Rikku!"
