Paranormal Activity 101, Tuesday, January 25th

Alaric seemed to be in a better mood this week thanks to the fact that his apartment had heat again and he didn't have to trudge through like a foot of snow to get here. The good mood translated into Alaric preparing a long lecture and a stupid-ass activity that would give him great joy to watch people try to pull off. He asked the students to meet him in the Danger Shop, which had been transformed into a pretty large graveyard with a section closed off for desks and a chalkboard since there were notes to be taken before they got to the dirty work.

And there would be dirty work today.

"Okay, due to popular demand, this week we will be covering ghosts. They're not something I'm personally experienced with, but there have been mentions of ghosts and things ghost-like since before the ancient Greeks so I'm inclined to believe that their existence is pretty legitimate." Of course after Mystic Falls he was liable to believe in anything. "A ghost is typically defined as the soul or spirit of the deceased that can manifest itself in various ways, both visible and non-visible. Reasons for their existence varies. In a lot of Greek mythology, ghosts often provided warnings for people. Nowadays you often see movies where angry ghosts are around to get revenge for their deaths. A popular form of this are ghosts known as White Ladies, who stick around because they want revenge against their lover who betrayed them. There's a bunch of reasons for a spirit not to move on to whatever afterlife there is out there."

Alaric launched into a deeper discussion of ghosts, their history across different parts of the world, where they were likely to be found and on the different types of ghosts one might encounter. He was quick to explain that not all ghosts wanted to hurt people, and that some were there to warn others of something and some just didn't realize they were dead. He then got into ways to detect ghosts, namely through EMT meters, witches and psychics. Then, finally, he got into how to get rid of a ghost if you needed to. Iron was known to get them to dissipate for a short period of time, and that finding, salting and burning the bones was always a good way to get rid of a ghost permanently.

"Okay, so, today we're gonna do something that I hope you won't ever have to do in the future, but will definitely count as your exercise for the day," Alaric said, smiling like the evil jerk he was. "I want you all to grab a shovel, some salt, gasoline and a lighter. Then I want you all to dig up one of those graves and salt and burn the bones in there."

Honestly, this was completely unnecessary and he knew it. He just didn't much care. "Don't worry; they're fake bones and there won't be any gross corpses to look at or smell. I apologize in advance if your clothes get dirty."

He so didn't care.

Rosalind was... not particularly disturbed by today's activity. The salting of a body before burning it was new, for sure, but really...

She took up a shovel and picked a grave at random to start digging at.

Fake bones or not, this was still something that Bod didn't feel particularly comfortable with. Honestly, it seemed disrespectful to him and he knew that was because of his upbringing.

He tried not to look too uncomfortable with things but probably failed and mostly just looked sad.

Bod had a shovel but he wasn't doing anything with it beside leaning against it and staring at the dirt. Trying to convince himself they weren't the real bones of someone who'd passed hadn't worked yet but he was still trying.

Claudia thought this activity was a little absurd. Not in a "wear a frilly dress and hit each other with fish" sort of way, but still.

Ah well. No one could say she wasn't willing to dive into a bit of absurdity.

Did Alaric see Caroline? Did he notice her adorable boots and clean clothing? The man was seriously out to get her with these activities. But she was a good TA and completely there for her classmates. Especially if they wanted to bitch.

"You look ready for hard labor," Caroline remarked, going to stand by Bod with her own shovel.

"Do I?" Bod asked, snapping himself out of his reverie to glance over at Caroline and smile lightly. "I've never done this particular type of hard labor before. The ghosts I knew tended to get rather upset if you were digging around their homes. You'd be amazed how hard a ghost can punch if they're properly angry."

"I've never met one," she replied, looking him over thoughtfully, like perhaps she could understand his hesitation. "I don't think anyone can get mad in here, though I wouldn't put it past Ric to set that up as a result." Ass that he was.

"Does that mean you're going to join me in said hard labor?" Bod asked, giving her a lingering once over. She didn't really look like the digging type at all. That just meant teasing her was a little easier. "You certainly look like an experienced digger. Perhaps you should demonstrate for me so I know what I'm doing."

Kate only paid minimal attention in the beginning, her thoughts on a variety of other things. But once Alaric got to the assignment her lips were a thin line, and she'd tensed up in her chair without even noticing. She couldn't help but glance at Bod without even thinking about it, and wonder how this was going over with him.

And then she looked ahead again. She knew how she felt about this.

Once the lecture part of the class was over and the activity had been announced, Kate came up to Alaric, kind of obviously displeased though trying to hide at least some of it. She looked tense.

"Professor? I'm sorry I missed class last week. I... had personal issues to deal with, and the snow didn't help." But that wasn't all she had to say, of course. "Also, I'm not gonna be doing this activity. Sir."

Look at her, trying her hardest to be polite.

Ack, yeah. Kennedy didn't think she was up to setting anything on fire right now. There were... lingering visuals there, and the associations felt weird, and besides, did this even work in her world? She was pretty sure Constance would've covered that with her by now.

So those were pretty good reasons to sit the exercise out. On the other hand, it was still kind of useful, and what the hell good was she if she couldn't tough these things out, and...

And pretty much, she just sat there looking conflicted.
