Boom-De-Yada Science - Danger Shop, Wednesday, Period 1 [Week 5]

"Live every week like it's Shark Week," the Doctor said, as if the fact that they were on yellow, inflatable life rafts (several, six to eight people to a raft, in case you were wondering) wasn't important. "One of the monitors in the TARDIS won't stop playing television programmes about sharks," he explained. "And they say live every week like it's Shark Week. Well, it's Shark Week." He sounded far too happy about that. "We happen to be in shark-infested waters. Sharks, for the non-Earth-dwellers amongst you, are type of predatory fish that humans tend to be afraid of because of their rows of razor sharp teeth and propensity for eating anything that gets in its way if it smells tasty. The film Mandibles didn't do the creatures any favours." He prattled on for a few minutes describing the physiology and behaviour of sharks. As always, you should read more about the subject, or there are places that will let you go swimming with sharks if you're more hands on. Though don't get hands on with the sharks. They probably won't like being groped. But then who does? Don't answer that," he added quickly. "I don't want to know. Oh, and no matter what the films say, there's no such thing as a sharktopus that moves on land and growls. Everyone knows they're not amphibious and don't have vocal chords.

Two activities this week," he moved on as if sharktopi were normal. "One requires your immediate attention, the other is more of a homework assignment. Look at me, giving real homework assignments like I'm a teacher or something. Just call me the Teacher. No, I'm the Doctor, don't call me the Teacher, that's stupid. Activity one! We're in shark-infested waters. While we're working together as a group to paddle these rafts of questionable buoyancy over to that conveniently placed island on the horizon, I want you to tell me something. You have the opportunity to go out into the world, or universe, and experience potentially wonderful things, but there's a catch - there's a shark in the water that might try to eat you. Or, to be less metaphorical, there's a very good chance that something incredibly dangerous will try to kill you simply for being out there. Do you choose to go knowing about that potential and very likely danger? Whether you decide yes or no, why?

The other activity for hoooomework is to live this week like it's Shark Week, however you choose to interpret that. I want you tell me what your approach was next week."

Wet or afraid of sharks

Listen to the Doctor's lecture, freak out about being on one of the rafts in the middle of shark-infested waters or just have a chat.

"We're in shark-infested waters. While we're working together as a group to paddle these rafts of questionable buoyancy over to that conveniently placed island on the horizon, I want you to tell me something. You have the opportunity to go out into the world, or universe, and experience potentially wonderful things, but there's a catch - there's a shark in the water that might try to eat you. The Doctor was in this raft, lazing about and generally not being of much use to anyone. It was a refreshing change in a crisis, even a holographic one. The other rafts always remained within earshot thanks to the Danger Shop controls, so he could hear the responses from other rafts.

Bobby was torn between hanging over the side of his raft to try to see as many sharks as possible and wanting to stay right in the center of it so the sharks couldn't take offense to something he did accidentally and then eat his face. He didn't think his mom would like it much if she came this weekend and he didn't have a face.

Cara

Cara was certainly not wondering how much trouble she'd get into if anyone on her raft 'accidentally' fell over the side. Not at all.

Cara hefted her paddle in one hand, it'd do as a makeshift weapon if any of the holographic sharks got too close.

"Mord'Sith fear nothing, especially not just a chance of dying." That would be a 'yes' then.

Bobby considered the question for a long time before he finally answered. "But - if the things out there are trying to kill you - maybe you could, I don't know, find out why they want to kill you and try to make peace with them. It's important to go out there, but there's no reason to just assume they're going to be violent."

The Doctor's talk of sharks was actually kinda cool in Clark's opinion. ...and then he started talking about danger. It was like the Doctor knew how life seemed to go!

I am, largely because I don't know the song so I can't be earwormed myself. Zing!

"Of course I go!" Christian said rapidly, and with great vigor. "I'm young and healthy. There will be plenty of time to sit by a fire and stay safe when I'm old. Besides, it's not as if staying home is a sure road to safety -- my father knew a chap who got trampled by a horse right outside his garden gate."

Though his hands were firmly inside the raft. Christian may have liked a little risk, but he was not a stupid man, not entirely.

It had taken her the whole five classes to realize that she couldn't really do a thing about the holographic projections with her magic. Technology had won that fight.

That only left the option to grab a paddle and try to reach the damn island.

"Most people here have lifestyles that will get them into danger one way or another." Note how she hadn't included herself in the sentence? "I'd be more pleased with myself knowing I tried something and failed than I didn't do a thing due to being scared."

Kurt peered down into the water nervously.

If a shark attacked, would he be able to 'port the raft and all its occupants? It was a lot to carry...

Claudia was totally listening. She was just also peering over the edge of the raft to see if she could see the sharks.

Scientific curiosity, man. It could kill.

"Isn't life kind of inevitably fatal, anyway?" Cheerful, Claudia. "I mean, yeah, you can minimize your risks to live a long time, but what's the point if you never do anything really interesting?"

"It depends on what the danger is, and our own abilities, and what's out there to be seen," Kurt decided as he picked up a paddle. If how much you want to see things is more... more than how likely you are to get hurt, then I say go for it!" He shrugged. "But, you know, don't be stupid about it. Make sure you're prepared."

Raven kept an eye out for sharks. If they were real and not simulated by the danger shop, she'd just absorb their aggression and hunger and have nice safe shark friends.

"I have done just that," Raven said softly. "My home of Azarath was very sheltered, and I left it to come to the world of my mother's birth. It has been very dangerous, but it has also been worth it for the friends I have made."

Bruce couldn't quite place his finger on why (http://www.comicsalliance.com/2010/08/05/best-shark-fights-comics/), but he had a strange urge (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0UJaprpxrk&feature=related) to just go out and beat the crap out of some sharks. It was an impulse he could and would control.

... But now he really kind of wanted to fight a shark.

"Of course I'd do it. If mankind didn't have the capability to defend himself against a shark - or nearly anything else we've come across so far - we'd never have accomplished anything in this world," Bruce mused. And by that he meant that if he had to, he could absolutely beat up a shark. "So why would I let something I have the capability to overcome stop me from doing something wonderful?"
