Canada Is Not That Strange And Other Biases | Wednesday | Period 2

It was Wednesday which meant Fraser was up at the front of his class, looking alert and pleased to be there. He gave the class a smile as they assembled and settled down.

"Welcome back," he said, nodding at the class as a whole. "I hope you enjoyed last week's demonstration of how biases can play into food choice. Today, we're going to discuss biases a little more in depth. Most of you know what a bias is and most of you know that everyone has them, whether they be serious or less so. So, I want to have a discussion today. We're going to talk about your personal biases. Please share one bias that you think you have and that you're comfortable with sharing."

Fraser paused while he let the students begin to think of that. "For instance, one of my biases is that I think Canada isn't strange at all. Perhaps that's cheating because it's in the title of the course so I'll share another. I also think hockey is the most physically intensive sport. I'm sure you may have a differing opinion. So, share your biases and please feel free to discuss them with me and with each other. Let's get started."

omggggg I got in an argument with a guy at work last week who said that football was more physically demanding than hockey. REALLY? REALLY? THAT IS SO DUMB.

HAHAHAHA! I think soccer and football might tie for the most physically demanding, tbh. I love me some football but those boys do get breaks every so often, at least.

I have to turn it over to the sexy gentleman Brendan Shanahan to answer this one. Shanny, take it away...

I don’t know, you tell me. We need to have the strength and power of a football player, the stamina of a marathon runner, and the concentration of a brain surgeon. But we need to put all this together while moving at high speeds on a cold and slippery surface while 5 other guys use clubs to try and kill us.

Oh yeah did I mention that this whole time we’re standing on blades 1/8 of an inch thick? Is ice hockey hard? I don’t know, you tell me.

Next question.

Well, Ariel knew right away that she was incredibly biased to think that being a human was better than being a mermaid, but that was definitely under the category of not to be shared.

So she considered a little bit and decided on a substitute. "I'm pretty biased," she offered, "that music can make any situation better, and that, if there's something you want to accomplish, you shouldn't let anything get in your way."

Warren was well aware that he'd been going on about how people in general tended to be biased about anything that was different from themselves, and so he decided to steer clear of that topic entirely. Instead... something light, today.

"I'm going to have to say that I'm pretty biased when it comes to looking at cityscapes," he decided. "Because I don't think anywhere in the world is going to be able to beat an elevated view of New York at night."

AHAHAHAH! I love that quote so damn much. IT'S ALMOST OCTOBER 8TH.

(And I totes had to sign in under a different account because it feels like blasphemy to speak of my love for hockey using Sheppard icons.)

Tara had to think about this one. "I'm biased about spelling," she said. "If somebody spells something wrong, or they use that text messaging kind of typing all the time, I ... kind of assume they, um, maybe aren't a very careful person."

"Well, it's home," Warren admitted, maybe a little sheepishly. "And it's a view that I know pretty well. I used to spend hours as a kid, just staring out the window at it after dark."

Granted, it had been while wishing that he could be out there, too. But that was beside the point.

"Sometimes," Tara answered, bobbing her head. "If it's a really hard word I can let it go, but if it's something I should have known I feel like it makes me look dumb. It's depressing."

Sara actually had to devote a great deal of thought to this; she'd never really considered many of the opinions she, or the people she'd grown up around, to be biases in any negative sense. It was simply how everyone thought. This future perspective shed a rather different new light on matters.

"I suppose," she finally ventured, "that you could say I'm inclined to feel a bit sorry for anyone who's so practical as to dismiss any fanciful notions outright. I feel awfully sorry for them, actually. Does that count as a bias?"

Karla went for honesty rather than something light. "In my world, there is a strict divide between Blood--people with Craft--and landens, the people without. The Blood rule and we act as caretakers for the land and the people on it. Thus, I've grown up thinking differently about people who have powers and people who don't. Coming to Fandom's made me readjust that thinking, but it's something I still struggle with."

Rilla was above noticing such clearly obvious coughing, and that's why she didn't turn her head to even acknowledge that she'd heard it.

Besides, not associating with people who believe they are related to the Devil isn't a bias. It's just good sense. So there.
