Spaceships 101- 1st period- Week #4
"So," Jaina greeted the class, if that was really considered a greeting, "I hope you were all paying attention last week, because you know those ships attacking you? You get to fly one today."
Showing them the holographic display of the ship, she continued, "This is a TIE fighter. It's an Imperial starfighter, and while they definitely have limitations, they can do a good bit of damage. They don't have shields, so you're going to take more damage if you get hit. They don't have a hyperdrive, so you can't jump to another system or follow an enemy or jump away if you need to escape. They don't have life support systems, which should be self-explanatory. If you get hit too bad to go on in one of these, you're pretty much stuck. But they're fast, and they're light and maneuverable.
"Good thing, too, because you're going to be running an asteroid belt today. This was a real run in the Dubrillion System, a competition run by a friend," Jaina said, keeping it vague. She was the leader in it, too, but she wasn't the type to brag about that sort of thing. "Your job is simply to get through the asteroids for as long as possible with your weapons disabled. When you get hit too hard to go on- and you will at some point- you're out. Whoever stays in the longest gets... well, you get bragging rights."

(I really don't; I almost never dream about stuff that directly connects to my day.)

On the other, she still only made it halfway through the field before she zigged when she should have zagged, and felt the sim shake with the non-fatal version of an earthshattering kaboom.

And that was why Ben was very focused on doing well at this particular exercise.
He emerged in a TIE fighter that had clipped an asteroid and so had lost some valuable time, but he'd lived through it. Maybe next time he'd get closer to Jaina's score.
Re: Listen to the lecture
Even if she hadn't pried the details out of Anakin afterward, she'd have found out eventually; that run had been a key part of what eventually became the Jedi battle meld.
. . . Sithspawn, she wasn't big on flying TIEs. Stupid lack of shielding.
Re: Get in the sim
She'd run Lando's Folly a few times in simulation, training with her pilots, but that had been in an X-Wing, so her approach to doing the run in a TIE was off from the start.
It wasn't that her time was bad; she actually managed a pretty decent score, and stayed in the belt for a good while.
It was just that she finally exited the belt by way of miscalculating the gap between two asteroids, jinking too hard, and shearing off a solar wing panel entirely, which sent her careening into a third asteroid and vaping herself spectacularly.

I haven't recovered from that trauma.

She took a few hits, but she made it through to the end of the run. No where near any speed records, but it had been fast enough for Momoko.

who totally saw this post yesterday, really, *sigh*Re: Listen to the lecture
