Celtic Studies class for Monday

There is actually no chocolate in sight today, but a very suspicious smell is emanating from the top drawer. Camulus is studiously ignoring it.

"Good evening, class," he rumbles, standing. "It appears that Friday's class was eaten by Locker 327. I hope that your projects are coming along well. Remember, they are due on Friday."

He paces to the board and begins scribbling a very complicated diagram. "The focus of today's lesson will be Spain." He grins wryly. "I believe that Spain gave Mr. Solo a bit of mental anguish last time it was mentioned. We move once again into the realm of unreality to have a look at Spain as imagined by the monks and scholars who finally transcribed and translated the Lebor and other books. It should be noted that Spain, when talking about the Celts, is not really Spain. It was considered the logical physical location that was referred to when the Celts spoke about the otherworld.

"The otherworld of the Celts is a very odd place. It is in no way similar to the Underworld of the Greeks. It was also known as the Land of the Dead, the Land of the Living, and Tir na Nog (the Land of Youth) - all contradicting monikers, to be sure. The location of this otherworld was never stationary, either. Sometimes it is west, across the sea. Sometimes it is in the south of Ireland, in the hostel of the gods. It is probably the combination of these two which led to the rather more mundane locale of Spain. More often the Land of the Living is underneath Ireland itself, the entrances found in the fairymounds, the duine, the sid of the feyfolk, the sidhe - those who were once known as the Tuatha de Danaan.

"Another of the many contradictions of the Land of the Living is its very being. It is supposed to be brighter, more full, more everything than the real world, yet is only a shadow of that real world." He pauses. "Enough of insubstantials. Work on your projects. Wednesday will be a work period. You will also be able to talk to be about anything you've encountered in the readings so far."

[[I have no clue where Friday's post went. It disappeared and I didn't realise until Sunday night. So hi. And . . . bye?]]
