First Aid - Danger Shop, Friday, Period 5 [Week 1]

This workshop roster was a lot smaller than last term's, and that made things easier to deal with everyone on a one-on-one basis. Hawkeye left a note outside the Danger Shop asking everyone to gather and wait there until it was class time. The doors opened right on time and the students were then able to enter, only to find themselves in a very different environment to the school building they had left.

The room looked exactly like the school gym in the dorms building only it was littered with cots full of injured people, people attending to them and curtained off areas where surgery was going on. More and more wounded people were being brought in and loaded onto cots. Every so often outside there was a thunderous boom and crash coming from somewhere outside making the building rock and shudder from the vibrations. The lights were dimmer than usual and would momentarily dim further after the shaking.

In between loud noises, the gym was surprisingly quiet. Shoes would squeak as people walked on what was once the basketball court. Over near the weights area, doctors would call for a suture or suction or for more light or a new patient to put back together.

Hawkeye, dressed in scrubs, made his way through the foot traffic to his new students.

"Welcome to First Aid. I'm Hawkeye Pierce. I'll learn your names after we deal with the wounded who are piling up. Today's not bad for a pretty bad day. These people aren't real and you won't recognize any faces, but this has happened before and it could happen again tomorrow with people you do recognize who are real and who will need your help. They could be your roommate or the kid you sit next to in class or your best friend. You're here to learn how to help them. Get started. Pick a patient, find out what's wrong with them and tell me what you see and what you think. Decide on a number to give them. 0 for beyond help and I'd better not find any of you giving anyone a 0 today, 1 for those who need immediate attention, 2 for those who need medical attention as soon as there's an opening that's not an emergency, 3 for minor injuries that can wait. Tell your orderly the number. I don't care how much or how little experience you have with injuries. You have to start somewhere. Time to go."

Dru kept looking around as Hawkeye spoke, taking in the situation. This wasn't exactly what she'd been expecting from a first aid class but she supposed it was a little more interesting then watching videos.

The patient Dru picked was an older man. He had a bleeding scalp wound and was holding his arm tucked close to his body.

As soon as Karla entered the room, she felt herself slipping into full-on Healer mode. She kept an ear out for what the professor was saying, but was already scanning the patients nearby. The ability to listen while multitasking had been a hard-earned lesson in the early days of her training.

When he stopped speaking, she raised her hand. "We're not trying to help anyone today?" she asked, making sure she had half-heard him correctly. "Just giving numbers and moving on?"

The room was bad, but not 'burned-barn-full-of-landens' bad, so it still wasn't the worst she'd ever seen. Holding that reminder close, Karla immediately began walking down the rows, projecting soothing calm as she did.

The toughest part of this class would be remembering not to use Craft, she could tell that much already.

Kurt stared at the carnage in horror. Every time an explosion burst, he flinched.

Eventually, he crossed himself.

"Hush, hush," Karla soothed, swiftly bending over the bed. "Let me look at you."

The gash on his head was bleeding badly, but head wounds had a tendency to do so. Though the leg at that angle suggested a compound break, most likely. Rather than calling up Craft to do a full scan, Karla examined the boy with just her hands and medical knowledge, starting first with the head wound.

Momoko had actually chosen this class, but this was totally not what she'd expected it to be like. She'd expected... well, a classroom, for one thing. Not really the gym filled with wounded people while it sounded like a war was going on outside!

She also wasn't expecting to have to determine whether or not someone who was hurt would get medical attention.

"Can I go outside and fight instead?" She was only half joking; how could she say no to getting someone help?

Momoko agreed rather quickly with the teacher that she wasn't going to be giving out any zeros. She was almost positive she wasn't going to be giving out any threes, either.

As much as she didn't want to, and wishing all the while she was outside instead, Momoko made her way to the next unattended cot.

Gash aside, the bruising and the loss of memory was dangerous. He likely had a concussion. Between that and the leg, Karla felt comfortable turning and telling the orderly, "He's a one. Make sure the head wound is seen to and then tend to that leg. The cut could use stitches, but that's the last thing we should worry about."

Bending down again, Karla smiled at the boy. "Don't you worry. We'll have this fixed up soon," she said, squeezing his hand. "I've got some other people to check on, but I'll come back and see how you're doing before I go, okay?"
