Sing Like a Pirate! [Thursday, Period 2]

“Good day, cherubs!” Jack said, waving at his students with one hand as the other held onto the mainsail of his new ship. “This is the Red Lobster,” he continued grandly, waving at the brig with no small amount of pride. “I won it in a game of chance.” If by “game of chance” one meant “stole like a pirate did if you didn’t watch your ship carefully.” Jack was a big fan of the concept of finders keepers.

“Today is our first class on singing like genuine pirates,” he said, leaping down to land on the deck, “so haul yourselves up here using yonder ropes and grab hold of these even better ropes and repeat after me:

We pillage, we plunder, we rifle, and loot,
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.
We kidnap and ravage and don't give a hoot,

Maraud and embezzle, and even high-jack,

As he sang, Jack pulled rhymatically on the rope, beginning to hoist the mainsail into place. Once the class went through the song the first time, Jack waved his hand at Puck and said, “Carry on! I have important captaining to do,” then wove off down the deck.

Puck stared after him, and promptly said, "Sweet. I'm in charge. Okay, I'm not a big fan of that first-day introduction crap -- I already know you if I want to. But I bet he wants us to do something like that, so, um...your name, your grade, and your favorite type of music. And what you think this boat should be renamed to. I'll go first. I'm Puck, I'm a junior, and I like classic rock." He winked at that, because apparently he thought he was cool for that detail. "And I say we name the boat after me, which is what I'm gonna do if I don't like anyone else's suggestion.

Never mind that they'd be keeping the original name because Puck had no authority here. He pointed at random, saying, "You go next."

Prince Alexander of Daventry

Was it somewhat pathetic that Alexander was glad to find himself in this class because he actually liked all that hearty bellowing while pulling on riggings and feeling the seaside air in your face?

Maybe a little. But he didn't seem to be aware of that fact at all.

"My name is Prince Alexander of Daventry." The singing and the sails had helped to energize him, and thankfully, some of his nerves from the previous day felt entirely abolished. A ship was fairly familiar to him; a ship was a welcome symbol of freedom for him. "I've been placed in the junior class, I believe, and I'm fond of any sort of music, I suppose, though I'm partial to ones that allow for movement."

And there was a faint, wistful pause as he approached the last question. "And I think," there was some definite sheepishness now, but a faint smile, "we should rename her the Princess Cassima...."

Kate Gregson

Kate really should have read the class description a little more carefully. Like, the part about upper-arm strength.

... Yeah. Her arms hurt like hell. But she sang anyway.

Calvin

Calvin wasn't a particularly great singer, but at least he was enthusiastic?

If Kate looked a little tired by the time they got to the introductions, it probably she was probably doing pretty good job of hiding the fact that she was really frigging tired. Not just a little.

"I'm Kate Gregson," she said, "and I'm a senior, and I like... Well, I like good music. But as far as genres go, I think like, goth rock and electro and stuff like that are at the top of the list. And..."

She had to pause and think about the last question. "Maybe something like Terror of Maryland?"

"He really left you in charge?" She means it with love, Puck. "... Oh who am I kidding, as if Captain Sparrow actually cares what goes on in his classes." Beat. "Also, classic rock? I mean really?"

... With love, dammit.

"Calvin, I'm a senior and I like music you can dance to," Calvin said. "We should name her Bob."

"Why?" Puck asked flatly, not really interested in wistfulness. "Girlfriend's name?"

"So you wanna be a dangerous pirate and not a fluffy pink one this time?" Puck asked, arching a brow at her.

"Bob is a boy's name," Puck pointed out thoughtfully. "If we're gonna call the ship a 'her,' then it should probably be a chick's name, right?"

"He clearly observed my wisdom and maturity last session," Puck replied, practically posing. "Whatever, I'm in charge. I could probably give you detention for insulting great music."

No, Puck. You can't.

He got a snort in return. "No," Kate said, "I wanna be a little more obvious about being dangerous, this time."

"Uh huh, sure." Yeah, no he couldn't. "You're just full of unhealthy delusion today, aren't you?"

"Detention for calling me delusional, now!" Puck declared loftily.

"Huh, that's a good point," Calvin said after a moment. He felt immensely sorry for Puck, must be hard to have a girl's name.

"Hey, I was being nice," Kate argued with a snicker. "I could've just said you were full of shit."

"Detention for bad language," Puck said, tsking. "Kate -- no, no, Katherine," he had no idea if that was her full name, but he felt like full-naming her, "I'm so disappointed in you."

Yeah, Puck wasn't that bright. He'd make that leap later, if it came to naming the ship after himself. "But simple is good! Unless maybe this ship is a boy. Can ships ever be dudes?" He had no idea.

Kate made a distinctly unimpressed face at him. "You just totally ended up calling me someone else's name," she said. "Also? I've been in detention at this school once. And I still don't know what for. So I'm not too worried."

"I'll make sure it's with a really crappy teacher," he vowed. "Like, the boringest one."

"Excellent English there." Said the girl who kept saying 'awesomest' over and over. "Do we even have any boring teachers?"

"I'll find one," he vowed, nodding. "Even if I have to bring 'em in from Lima. Maybe I'll call my old coach. He made people do laps for detention."

"Nuh uh," Kate said, shaking her head. "You can't tap into Midwest boring, that's against the rules."

The rules she'd just made up right now, yes.

"'Sides, I'm immune to it."

"Um, not against the rules. I'm in charge," he reminded her helpfully.

That does not make you, like, king, Puck.

"For like an hour on this fabulous Thursday morning," she pointed out, just as helpfully. "I don't think your power extends beyond this class."

Nyota Uhura

Uhura decided that while running had improved her stamina, she still had spaghetti for arms. Oof.

She sang with all her heart, though, her voice a sweet soprano.

"Uhura, junior, Romulan electronica, and I think we should call the ship The Tentacles of Antares. Tennie, for short," Uhura said efficiently. She rubbed her arm muscles absently.

Puck decided that Romulan electronica was something he didn't want to know about, because he was super-against stupid club music and that sounded like it. But, this was a hot girl, so he smiled anyway. "You wanna give the boat a nickname?"

"Unless I'm like, officially the teacher now," Puck replied with a grin.

Kate didn't miss a beat. "Then I'm dropping this class."

"Even if I promise to teach shirtless every week?" he tried, sad.

"Half the time I barely remember what you look like with your shirt on," she remarked. "So, something I'm probably going to see a lot of anyway isn't really incentive enough."

Joolushko Tunai Fenta Hovalis

Joolushko was unamused at somehow ending up in this class, if it could even be called that.

Her singing probably left her classmates unamused as well. Look, she screams. She doesn't sing.

"Joolushko Tunai Fenta Hovalis. I'm a senior now," Joolushko said. "I prefer Interion music to anything I've heard here. And I have no boat naming preferences."

Oh, sure, Puck, hit him where it hurt.

Prince Alexander seemed a bit hesitant to answer. "Er, well," he said eventually, "not..exactly."

Uhura shrugged, then winced at the pain in her shoulder. "Why not? Besides, Tentacles of Antares is a bit of a mouthful."
