Practical Crisis Problem Solving - Danger Shop, Tuesday, Period 3 (11am-12pm)

Upon walking through the doors of the Danger Shop, it was completely understandable if the fine students of Practical Crisis Problem Solving (which the Doctor preferred to call "Staying Out of Trouble Badly") were very confused. They were in the park. Yes, the park, the one in Fandom just outside and down the road. Fandom all around them looked normal, at least as far as the beach. Then the water and everything beyond it was all hazy. The sky was an odd shade of red too.

"Hello!" the Doctor said, looking very smart in his tweed jacket and bow tie. There were other clothes too (including pants), but those were the two articles worth mentioning. "I'm the Doctor. You are all in Staying Out of Trouble Badly." See, with the calling the class the wrong name. "Which might be on your little schedule spreadsheets as something to do with problem solving. If you're not supposed to be here," he added with a smile, "stay anyway. Have some fun. Today we're going to get the creative juices flowing." He frowned. "No, I don't like the sound of that. It sounds too...moist. Doesn't matter." He switched back on track. "You might be wondering why the sky is red. Or orange. Burnt sienna? Would we call it that? Maybe Sinopia instead. The colour, not the planet. I had a point somewhere.

The sky. Yes. The sky is red because the entire island," he turned around in a circle and pointed in every direction for emphasis, "is surrounded by a shield. You can't penetrate it and you can't transport out of it, sorry if that's your thing. The reason for this a species called the Atraxi have tracked a criminal here to the very pretty Fandom Island. Prisoner Zero is its name. If Prisoner Zero doesn't give itself up in an hour, the Atraxi are going to incinerate everything and everyone inside the shield. They don't do things by halves.

I don't expect you to find Prisoner Zero today, but before the hour is up, each of you is to come up with a plan. Brainstorm. That's what we're here for today. Brainstorm a plan. Talk to me. Talk to each other. Let's get some ideas on how to find Prisoner Zero, stop the Atraxi from burning us all to a crisp and save Fandom. Your name might be useful too, if you don't mind telling me it. Oh, and if you do have higher brain function and can understand what I'm saying, please raise your hand so I can identify anyone who doesn't and can't."

Oh no, we're all about to die horrible deaths edition.

You're in a room that looks like Fandom! What's up with that? Oh yes, and we're all going to die unless we do something about that. Don't forget to raise your hand if you can understand the Doctor.

Talk to the Doctor! Talk to each other! Figure out how to find Prisoner Zero in a town of this size in less than an hour and stop everyone from dying. Did I mention the horrible deaths?

Cara, who knows she's a TA, and Hiccup, who doesn't yet but soon will before the class is over.

For reasons other than brainstorming. He is having way too much fun today.

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III

Hiccup was a touch bemused by the Doctor's interesting approach to lecturing, but only a touch. Toothless simply flicked his ears and sat down next to Hiccup with something that might have been a sigh. Yes, Hiccup had brought the dragon to class, ridden him, in fact, seeing as his leg was giving him a bit of grief, and they were hanging at the back of the class.

He put his hand up because, touch bemused or not, he could understand the Doctor. Toothless looked at Hiccup's raised hand, cocked his head at the Doctor, and kept all his limbs exactly where they were. Whether this was because he couldn't understand or not was anybody's guess.

The Doctor made his way through the group of students to where he saw a hand that wasn't raised. Or a paw. Claw? What was the correct terminology for a reptilian quadruped anyway? Foot maybe. Foot would do. "You don't have hands, technically speaking," the Doctor noted. "You can raise a foot if that's more realistic."

He didn't seem to take into account that this was a dragon he was talking to.

Hiccup was shaking his head. "Hang on. How do we even know this Prisoner Zero did anything wrong?" he asked, glancing at Toothless. "Not that I'm saying I've got a sudden burning desire to go up in flames, but someone who's happy to wipe us all out to get their hands on one person isn't exactly high up on the credibilty meter if you know what I mean."

Cara

Much as she suspected her life would be easier if she didn't understand what the Doctor was saying, Cara did, so she raised her hand.

Hiccup looked at Toothless and Toothless looked at Hiccup and then they both looked at the Doctor. "This is Toothless," Hiccup said, and Toothless gave the Doctor a bright look, ears flicked forward, and let loose a low, inquiring rumble. "He doesn't speak, uh, person. How much he understands, well," he shrugged, "who can tell."

Toothless slanted a look at him and Hiccup grinned back, causing Toothless to shake his head and turn his attention back to the Doctor.

Cara looked so very happy to be there. Talkative too.

The Doctor frowned a deep, thoughtful, serious frown. He might have been concentrating or sizing up Toothless. "Toothless," the Doctor repeated, turning his attention to the boy. "I don't have a Toothless on my class roster. Are you auditing or in the wrong room?" He was still directing his questions to Toothless, of course. "Not that you have to leave if you are, but if there's been a typographical error on my list, the moose in the office ought to know."

Shane Gooseman

"A police force from another part of the galaxy have come all this way to retrieve a prisoner - an escaped prisoner, mind you - who is so dangerous it has the designation Zero, all and nothing at the same time. Inside, but outside of the numbering system." The Doctor tried to stare Hiccup down with a deathly serious expression. He didn't give him a chance to react though, because he pulled back, suddenly all casual again. "Though it's a fair point. Intergalactic police forces aren't always the most rational. Do you like complicating things?" the Doctor accused. "It's not enough that you're about to be deep fried and have to find what the Atraxi want, you want to call into question whether you should even be handing the prisoner over at all?" There was a right answer and a wrong answer to this, and the Doctor's reaction was not indicative of the right one.

"Everyone," the Doctor announced upon seeing her. "This is Cara. She's going to be my teaching assistant. Bother her with any questions you might have that you don't want to direct at me. Also let her know if anything is set on fire that shouldn't be."

Hiccup exchanged another look with Toothless. "No he wouldn't be on the roster, because he's a dragon. See? He's got these wings," Toothless lifted his wings, "and a tail," Toothless turned around to show that he did, indeed have a tail, and a fancy red prosthetic tailfin, "and scales and claws and he breathes fire. Toothless no!" Toothless let out the breath he'd just drawn in. "I know it looks like we're outside but we're not, so no fire," he told the dragon.

The Doctor pondered this. Wings - yes. Tail - yes. Scales and claws and breathing fire - yes, yes and presumably yes. There was a dragon in front of him. Not only a dragon-like creature but a genuine dragon. Sometimes he missed the obvious. It was a thing.

"Not a student," the Doctor repeated quietly, then was silent for a moment. "Has he always been a dragon?"

Which left Cara wondering why exactly he was worried enough about that last thing to make it explicit.

And if the Doctor counted as something that shouldn't be on fire.

Hiccup wasn't so fond of being on the receiving end of that look, and he backed up a step into Toothless, who craned his head over Hiccup's shoulder, but relaxed slightly when the Doctor's tone changed.

"Well yeah," he replied, like it was obvious. "I'm not just going to take the Atraxi's word that Prisoner Zero is bad or evil because they say so or because they're bigger or scarier or better at naming things than me." His voice and expression were unusually serious, and he reached up to put a hand on Toothless' head. "Been there, done that, and if I'd listened then Toothless would be dead. So yeah, this is me, complicating things."

Jenny considered pretending she couldn't understand the Doctor, but since they'd actually held conversations in the past, she probably wouldn't be able to get away with that for long, so she sighed and raised her hand.
