"Yo, Rookies!" Today, Reno's class had been instructed to meet in the park, and to wear some good shoes for walking in. "I ain't gonna write up a final for you guys, yo. The stuff you gotta take with you outta this class ain't nothin' I can slip you a pop quiz for. So we're gonna do somethin' a little different, today."

He stuck his hands in his pockets, smiling lazily at the students assembled.

"Back where I come from, we used to have a tradition, yo. A Rookie's first assignment would be to go on patrol in Sector Eight of Midgar. Since Midgar's a little... out of the way," in oh, so many ways, "we're gonna dumb it down a little, here. This ain't the place I'd usually get my Rookies to secure, but it's still our stompin' grounds. For plenty of you, it might be home. So we're gonna take some time, walk around the island on your own or in groups. Get a feel for the breath of this place, yo. There ain't no shortage of island to go around, after all."

He smirked. He shrugged. A nearby duck quacked. He gave it a look.

"Secure Fandom Island, Rookies, and then meet back here before the end of class to report what you scouted out, yo. It's the last thing I'm gonna tell you to do in this class before I set you loose on the world again, so be thorough, would you? We got the preserve, beach, rocky bits, the campground and the area around the dorms, the schoolgrounds, the streets of town, businesses and warehouses and shit, I don't even know. Group off, scout around, and make sure the island ain't fallin' apart while it thinks you ain't lookin'."

Guarding your turf.

Such as it is. Stand around and listen to Reno babble, plot your route along the island, grab a partner, or space out on the ducks. Whatever floats your boats, Rookies.

You can use this thread to describe or play out your patrol route, stop by open posts over in the townie comm, or handwave to your little hearts' content.

What did you see out there on your patrol? Anything out of the ordinary? Everything still as perfectly usually insane as you remember it? Did you stumble across a part of town you weren't familiar with before? Are they selling a decent flavor of Squishy at T&C? Did you bring Reno one?

Who, Reno will admit, aren't even technically Rookies by a strict definition anymore. Which won't stop him from calling them that anyhow.

He's fairly certain that this is going to go far more smoothly than most first-day Rookie patrols he's sent out in the past.

Chloe listened to Reno as she looked around for a partner. No way was she running off on her own on the first assignment.

You already know, but for the sake of redundancy: Ino won't be in class today, la!

Tahiri Veila

Tahiri had brought along a pair of boots per the instructions, which she promptly deposited under a nearby tree when she found out the assignment. She'd been thinking it might be a situation where she might really need them, but not really.

Karla

From the school, Karla had taken Loon Drive down to Sphinx, scoping out ~~to see if 'Dite was still crazy~~ the area, then down Mallard, across Leprechaun, and into the park--where, it must be admitted, she got a little distracted.

If asked, however, she will be able to give a very thorough and detailed report of the park's grounds and landscaping!

Makita

She'd already done this today! Still, Makita pulled on her fingerless gloves and made sure her hat was firmly on her head before starting to stretch out her legs.

Maki made it a point to do a patrol of the island first thing in the morning, and usually in the evening, too. It wouldn't do to go soft.

Makita had never been a rookie, thank you! At least, not if you asked her, but she was hardly an unbiased source.

Squall Leonhart

Ben Skywalker

Ben was very used to this kind of assignment--it had been standard procedure in GAG--and decided to head toward the warehouses. It wasn't someplace he normally covered on his morning run.

Squall shrugged and pointed at the first person he saw. "You," he grunted, pointing at her. "With me."

Chloe blinked at him and then nodded, moving to his side.

Squall nodded back and started walking off at a brisk pace.

"Remind me again," he muttered, assuming she was keeping up. "What can you do?"

Because if she'd ever mentioned it in class, he hadn't cared and didn't listen.

Chloe blanched, looking anywhere but at Squall because she hadn't told anyone in class but Ino and Karla what she could do.

"I h-have a good s-sense of things around me," she finally settled on saying. She didn't have to say that they were ghosts and the dead that she sensed. "I'm learning to f-fight, as well."

Unless the ghosts started attacking them, Squall really couldn't care less.

"So, nothing, then," he replied. "Stay behind me, and if Reno's got any surprises for us, stay out of my way."

Momoko Akatsutsumi

Oh great. She was working with someone who thought he was Derek. She bit back any retort she would have given Derek and followed Squall.

He'd find out soon enough that she wasn't automatically useless.

Jenny Sparks

'Rookie' happened to be a badge of honor. She wasn't letting go of it easily.
