Surviving and Thriving, Monday, Period 2

For the final, the students met at the Causeway, and they had been instructed to wear whatever clothing they had purchased last week. Both Lady Ghanima and Captain Algren were dressed in contemporary attire again as well, and they were distributing tickets.

"Today," Algren said, "we're going to be putting what you've learned about modern times through this class and after spending a term on Fandom Island to the test. We won't throw you to the wolves, per se, but it is up to each and every one of you to conduct yourselves in a manner appropriate to the times during our outing today."

"We're taking a trip to the American Visionary Art Museum," Ghanima said. "And afterwards, we'll grab some fast food before heading back to campus, so that you don't miss lunch today."

"While an hour and a half is hardly enough time to take in the entire museum, we hope that you'll enjoy the outing, and take the opportunity to view both the exhibits and the other people in attendance."

"Keep an eye out for any works in the current Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness exhibition that reflect what it is we've told you about the mindset of people today," Algren added, "or if you're feeling ambitious, try to piece together what events through history have influenced the artists who have created these works."

He cracked a small smile. "Try not to burn down the building when we get there. And, if you enjoy this outing and find yourself wanting more before the next term begins, Lady Ghanima and myself are planning another outing for next week, a day trip on Sunday the 27th, for any of you interested in visiting a modern zoo or science center."

A portal then flickered into existence, and Ghanima gestured towards it with a smile. "Shall we?"

Annja loved museums so she was definitely wandering around and would be happy to talk to anyone.

Christian was enthralled as he looked at the paintings. This was Art! Genius! Passion! Perhaps a touch of madness, but weren't all geniuses mad? It was, in the best ways, Bohemian.

He found himself especially absorbed by the Voyage Into Space (http://www.vonbruenchenhein.com/galleries/evb_596/) series. The colors were just gorgeous.

Raven was immediately drawn to the garden and the meditation chapel, and spent most of her time there.

Christian prodded at his Big Mac suspiciously. He couldn't quite tell what the sauce on it was.

On the other hand, a free meal was a free meal. He'd eat it.

Raven did not order a McLobster. She ordered a salad since the sandwiched were all out of the question and she was somewhat dubious about the oil the fries were cooked in, but she was daring at least and got the Southwest salad. Without chicken, please.

Rilla, dressed appropriately (http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/set?id=19907628), was in no way hiding under the brim of her giant straw hat today.

Except for how she was. Her feelings had been rather bruised from the events of Friday.

Rilla stared for a very long time at the automobile covered in forks and spoons and decided that she didn't understand Art.

Rilla hadn't meant to make the girl behind the counter cry when she ordered the McLobster!

She apologized quite profusely and then took her lunch to a seat before poking a bit at what she'd ordered.

She could hear Susan's opinion on the apple pie in her head, too.

Ghanima was very much around, and enjoying the exhibits. Although she'd be happy to stop and chat with someone.

Tis place was strange and Beka had wandered, wide-eyed through the exhibition. The garden was more comfortable and so she sat down there for a while.

Uhura was wearing the electric blue dress (http://www.shabbyapple.com/p-662-manager-director.aspx/) she bought last week. She gravitated towards the Cauldron of Antares (http://www.vonbruenchenhein.com/galleries/gs_23/) exhibit. The paintings seemed to get at the heart of the fears she had about eventually going into space- conflict, violence, fear, the sheer enormousness of the unknown.

Uhura felt tears pricking behind her eyes. She moved on quickly.

Uhura frowned at her sandwich. "That can't be real meat," she said to herself.
