Birth of Television Comedy, Monday, First Period

"Not all comedy on TV is fiction," Mitchell began. For some godforsaken reason, he'd thought it was a good idea to take them out onto the dorm lawn for class today. He had his reasons. "Actually, the medium allows a lot of reflection on what's going on right then and there in the world, because as far as visual media goes, the internet is the only thing faster than the telly."

In some senses, anyway.

"They can respond to anything that happens in the news almost instantly. Like sports." Grin. "So we're going for something a bit recent now. Apres Match, since it's football season." Beat. "Proper football. I want you lot to watch the next few clips, and then... take a jersey--" He pointed at the stack of red-and-blue jerseys by his side, "--the ball, and play some football. If you can't work out the rules, just... pay attention to the program."

Another slight pause. "But play nice. I don't want this turning into the Battle of Nuremberg."

Nobody Owens

Bod picked out a jersey while he listened to the lecture. He draped it over one shoulder while he listened and hoped that he wouldn't get sunburned.

Having slid the jersey on earlier, Bod grabbed a ball and started kicking it around, just to get used to things. He'd seen the sport on television, of course, but hadn't ever played for himself.

Delirium

Jerseys and football.

This was going to end badly.

Jack wasn't normally athletic by any stretch of the imagination, but he made an exception for football -- he was fast and smart, and that made up for a certain lack of brawn.

He yanked on a jersey and decided to play with the students today.

Del wanted a whistle.

"Can I be referee? Referees have all the fun and can throw red cards at people." She was apparently asking anyone around, as the teacher was somewhere else.

"Can Kate and I be goalies ~~assuming she tags in~~?" Jack inquired. The weekend had been only slightly unsettling, and now he had a more important topic on his mind.

... whether Kate wanted to be a goalie or not was a question not much on his mind.

"If you can talk her into it," Mitchell said, graciously, and sounding a little amused for all that. It was a piece of slight overcompensation for the strangeness of the weekend, yes, but he was choosing to do so with some aplomb this time. "I didn't think you'd be eager to get a ball kicked at your head, mate."

Bobby Drake

By Jack's (extremely) relative standards, the weekend hadn't been that odd, though he had his questions about Tully. But he was inclined to count anything where no one died (or became deader than they had been before the weekend) as a success.

He smiled. "Having things hurled at me doesn't normally rank, but I'm not bad at blocking," he explained. "And I have a very hard head. I'll talk to her."

Not odd, maybe. But definitely something to work on the nerves - if you were Mitchell, and you were well aware what it was George had been trying to ask questions about.

"Good," he said, clapping his hands, "Good choice, Kate. She's got a much harder one. Maybe you'll be able to convince the students to direct most of their attempts her way."

Bobby had grabbed a jersey and was just nervously fiddling with it as he listened to the lecture.

It wasn't that Jack was oblivious to what George had said (or to Mitchell's reactions), but he'd weighed his curiosity against his relative certainty that this was not a situation he could change even if he was inclined to meddle, and it had balanced out as more something to keep an eye on than anything more.

In any case.

Jack snorted. "I might. That would be one way to ensure my team got more goals."

"Angling for the team captain spot as well?" Mitchell asked, in good humor.

"If they want to give it to me, sure," Jack said, though he hadn't quite meant for it to sound that way.

"And now we're getting closer to 'tinpot-dictator-by-subverting-the-democratic-process'," he said, critically.

"It's just a high school football game today. Tomorrow I'll invade a small nation," Jack answered.
