Home Ec is Outrageous!; Monday, Period Five [ 06/14 ].

"Good afternoon, eager students of mine!"

Aquaman stood at the front of the class, the dry erase board marked boldly with today's lesson and with a small armada of fishbowls in front of him; inside each, swimming in lazy, casual circles, were a variety of goldfish.

"With the recent events of the weekend, I almost considered postponing today's lesson for one about the proper care and maintenence of one's laundry, but, not only am I sure you'd like to move on from that ordeal, but today's topic is really too important! The family is the very crux of every household! And while I hope you've still got some time before you need to worry about settling down with little kiddies, preparation is often half the battle! I myself have a son, Arthur Jr! He's just about a teenager himself, so the road's probably just about to get bumpier."

On that note, Aquaman turned toward the board and lifted his marker.

"Life affords no greater responsibility, no greater privilege, than the raising of the next generation." C. Everett Coop was written with the requisite squeaking strokes of his pen.

He took a step back to admire the words of wisdom.

"So!" Clapping his hands, he did a turn to face the class again. "Today, we're going to watch a film about the adventures inherant in being a parent! Happiness is one of the most important elements to a well-run household, and happiness goes with family and love! But before we settle in for that, let me introduce you to this week's assignment! Congratulations! It's a baby fish!"

Aquaman chuckled, clearly pleased with himself and this idea. "Come on up, and each of you claim your adopted son or daughter for the next week! A fish, generally, is far less demanding of you than a real child, it's true, but this is going to be more than just feeding them and keeping their water clean! I expect you to interact with this fish as you would a real child; talk to it, care for it, love it and treat it well! Don't let it die, which, for goldfish, is more difficult than you'd think! And don't just go an replace it with a new one. Believe me, I'll know. I'll know a lot of things about how your week with your fish went, from the guppy's mouth itself, as they say!"

"So come claim your fish, get to know him or her a little better, and have watching the film be your first activity together as a new family! I've brought plenty of popcorn and fish flakes!"

[[ please wait for the slowly approaching OCD has arrived! Go fish! ]]

I went through five Hamlets and two Macbeths in college before I decided that giving them tragic Shakespearian names might be leading to their tragic Shakespearian deaths. My friend's tank was more geopolitical: hers were named after dictators. Mao was the meanest damn goldfish you've ever met.

Bod had never had a pet before. So, with a quiet a smile, he came up and, after some examination, picked his fish before returning to his desk. There, he started brainstorming names and other things he could do to care for the tiny animal.

Bod made sure his fish's tank was turned towards the television while they watched the movie. While the fish (still unnamed) seemed more interested in swimming, Bod kept his eyes on the movie.

Rilla did not look best pleased. She was not, as she mentioned rather vehemently to her various relatives, a fan of babies. Her mother and sisters found this to be horrifying.

And a fish had never been a pet at home. There had been far too many kittens running around Ingleside for the fish to be considered anything more than a midday snack.

So she looked a little dubiously at the fish and wondered just how much talking she was going to have to do this week. To a fish.

Rilla picked up a fish with a little wrinkle of her nose and placed it carefully on the corner of her desk.

She was calling him Ishmael.

...I was forbidden from goldfish for a little while as a wee young thing. My first fish, I scooped out of the tank and spent some time petting, like a kitten. It didn't really survive that much time out of water. And then, after being told that fishies were for looking, not for touching, I decided to help my next fish be prettier and shinier with a coat of Mommy's clear nail polish.

Gills and nail polish don't actually go well together, did you know that?

So...yeah. I spent the entirety of my elementary school years fishless. For good reason.

Calvin eventually picked a stripey-looking fish. He just hoped Hobbes didn't get peckish over the week.

Tara picked up her fish a bit awkwardly. She didn't have anything against goldfish, but she wasn't sure how Mr. Moxy would take a new stepsibling, especially one who smelled a bit like his special Sunday cans of salmon.

She'd name it Flory, after the fish with memory impairment in that cartoon.

I have had way too many in high school and college. At some point I said No more pets that can't remind me to feed them and change their [x].

Now I have nine cats. So.

Emmett was very, very tempted to name his fish Mary, yes. The black-velvet body, however, called for something a little more classic.

Audrey it was.

Okay... a fish wouldn't be such a bad thing, Kitty decided. She could keep it alive for a week. The whole talking to it thing... well, okay that wouldn't be a problem.

[identity profile] notavalleygirl.livejournal.com 2010-06-14 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Picking her fish was easy enough, but when she returned to her desk, Kitty just studied him for a while, trying to come up with a fitting name. Or maybe it was a her. See, this complicated things.

I skipped goldfish. Instead I had a Siamese fighting fish and a kissing angelfish. In the same tank. Let's just say the angelfish won the fight. Then died itself soon after.

And then there were the guppies. I can't talk about the tragedy that befell the guppies, but it was EPIC (for an eleven-year-old).

I had bettas, because the idea of fish that would TRY TO KILL ONE ANOTHER was awesome to me? idk.

Also Sookie will not be in today as she's off dealing with dead grandmothers and all, but she can GET A FISH NEXT WEEK, MAYBE?

Kurt noticed one that was sort of freaky-looking and blueish (http://www.qyhongda.com/photo/st/2ls.jpg), and immediately grabbed it.

When he got back to his seat, he waved a hand over the bowl dramatically. "I hereby dub thee 'Nachtfische'!"

Kurt munched happily on popcorn, and sprinkled a tiny bit of flakes in the bowl for his fishie.

Fish? Clark had never really had any pets before and thought just maybe this was something he could handle. Way better than foreign languages, at least.
