Flight and Flying [Tuesday, June 8]

"Today we're flying capital ships," he said, flicking his hands toward the screen set up in the corner. "Specifically this capital ship. It was called the Invisible Hand and when I was flying it, half of it had already broken up in the atmosphere, the rudder that steered the ship had been in that half, and the thrusters weren't firing enough to stop us. The equipment was also set up for a species other than human and I couldn't read the controls."

Anakin had landed anyway. There wasn't a pilot in a million that could replicate what he'd done.

"Since I was working under rather...strained...circumstances, we'll do something a little easier to live through," he said. "You'll have the entire ship, and the back half will be on fire. The controls will be set up for your species and you'll be able to read the controls."

Yes, he thought that was cutting them a break. Anakin was odd. "Begin!"

Leia had lots of mixed emotions watching the footage:

That really was her R2; Luke hadn't been kidding about the droid being passed through the family.

Watching her father in action and actually knowing now that he was her father made it all the more fascinating.

Mmmm, Obi-Wan.

Why couldn't something heavy have crushed Palpatine where he sat? There was no small amount of fury there. She knew her father and General Kenobi didn't know what evil he was capable of at the time, but that didn't stop her from glaring at the screen whenever she saw Palaptine.

Leia decided she definitely preferred smaller ships. Keeping this one level was a bitch, even though her father had made it look so easy.

Leia was focusing really hard on doing this right because she wanted to prove she was perfectly capable of handling the simulator and showing someone else how it worked. NO REASON.

She didn't crash. It was totally a controlled flight into terrain.

Leia had told Christian to come to the flight shed near the end of class so she could ask her father about showing him the simulator. If she'd known what kind of mood Anakin was going to be in, she might've reconsidered that plan, however.

The fact that she approached Anakin with a sweet and cheerful, "Hello, Father" would have probably clued him in to the fact that she wanted something even before seeing Christian behind her.

Christian hung back a few steps, letting Leia take the lead. "Good day, sir," he chimed in. "It's nice to see you again."

He probably would have been that polite even if he hadn't wanted anything.

Anemone was kinda wishing that they had to do the run with non-human-based controls. Just because it would be kinda awesome to figure out on the fly. Pun intended.

There was absolutely nothing to be alarmed about. Really! Leia smiled and said, "I wanted to ask your permission to show Christian the simulator. He's never flown before, and since I don't have a ship to take him up in, I could show him the next best thing."

"I promise I'd take very good care of it," Christian said, rocking forward a bit in his eagerness. "I just want to see, I wouldn't let anything bad happen."

"Don't you trust me?" Leia said, pulling a tiny pout. "I've been doing well, haven't I?"

In truth, Christian would have considered it perfectly normal (if not exactly desirable) for Anakin to come along. But Leia having reframed it in terms of trust made him take her side in the argument.

"I would never hurt your daughter, Professor. She's a wonderful girl," Christian promised. "There's no need for you to chaperone."

Leia winced. "I just want to show Christian what it's like to fly," she said, neither confirming nor denying the "date" part.
