Home Ec is Outrageous!; Monday, Period Five [ 06/07 ].

While it wasn't as nice a day as Aquaman had hopes for today's class, he had still invited his students out of the home ec room and into the great outdoors for some fresh air and aquatic appreciation. And basket weaving.

"Good afternoon!" he greeted them brightly. "I hope you're ready to kick off your shoes and roll up your pants...or skirts...because today, we're getting in the water! In the water is one of my favorite places to be; it's rather appropriate, as the water is my home! Today's a bit of a break from the typical maitenence of hearth and home, a bit of a project to work our minds and fingers and provide not only something beautiful, but something very functional as well. Today we're weaving baskets! Underwater!"

"Now," Aquaman continued, "traditional basketweaving is done outside of the water, but today we're using materials that, thanks to the water softening them and making them more piable, are woven while underwater. Gather around and allow me to demonstrate!"

Not even needing to roll up his sleeves, as his costume was specifically designed for water useage, Aquaman then went over how to weave a basket, all of the work done underwater.

"Now, if you're comfortable with the water and wish to go out deeper for a more underwater experience, please feel free to do so! If you're going to be doing anything with water, you're with the right man to watch over you! I'm not called Aquaman for nothing! But if you'd just like to wade in enough to submerge your basket, there is nothing wrong with that, either. And if you can breathe underwater like yours truly, well, then, I encourage you to submerge yourself in the ultimate basket weaving experience!"

Aquaman clapped his hands together, drawing in a deep, pleasant breath of the wonderful seaside air. "Well, then, weaving wonders, let's get started!"

I keep giggling at this class, just so you know. UBW is totally something that should be taught more than once, ha!

Bod didn't think he was quite skilled enough to submerge himself completely and weave a basket so wading in with his materials was going to have to do.

First of all, he had to get the hang of weaving while the water lapped around his legs. Once he did that, he'd work on the getting the materials in the water and getting started on the assignment.

This was ... kind of like sewing, right? Sort of? Tara was okay at sewing, so it was with some confidence that she gathered her reeds and waded into the shallow water.

She promptly learned it wasn't much like sewing at all. Sewing was never this slippery, for one. She frowned with concentration as she tried to weave the reeds together.

There might have been a blank stare from Kitty's direction. How did anyone ever decide in the first place to weave a basket underwater?

Rilla decided that this instructor was quite mad.

Rilla had made a cup from a leaf--the better to drink water fresh from a stream out of--but weaving an entire basket was quite beyond her.

Skirts hiked up to stay out of the wet, Rilla looked very irritated as the reeds just wouldn't do as she wanted them to. This was so terribly unfair.

No, there simply could not be any doubt about it; their teacher was in fact quite mad, Sara decided in silent agreement with Rilla.

And how on earth was she to weave a basket? She could barely manage stitching a simple hem without getting her thread hopelessly entangled.

Underwater, no less?

It was, most secretly, to be admitted that Sara would not have minded in the slightest were she to display a heretofore undiscovered talent for underwater basket-weaving, as she was quite certain this was one (granted, dubiously useful) area of domestic accomplishment about which Felicity could not brag.

She was, it seemed, doomed to disappointment in that regard, as she kept getting distracted by the effort of keeping her skirts properly hitched up -- and 'properly' was a multifaceted term -- while attempting the task, and her reeds kept floating away.

It took Emmett two lost handfuls of reeds before he figured out that there was no way in hell to do the bottom underwater (which he feared might have some sort of thematic significance for a moment before he remembered snorkels and oxygen tanks) and sloshed back to the sand to weave that on a semi-flat surface.

Now he could drag everything back into the damp, grab a seat cross-legged since he was tall enough to still stick safely out of the water, and make a basket about as pretty as the beaded lanyard that finally got him kicked out of boy scouts.

Kurt stared at Aquaman, and couldn't help but think that the man seemed a lot more like a television superhero than a real live one.

Oh, well. He sure was ENTHUSIASTIC!!!

Kurt carefully took off his watch and attached it to his belt. Even more carefully, he took his shoes off and immediately hid them in his backpack before anyone could see them change shape.

After that, he was ready to roll up his pants and wade into the water. He balanced on one foot, so that he could use the other to help with his weaving. It got done in record time, although the basket came out all uneven and lopsided. And it had somehow picked up little tufts of something blue pinched between the reeds.
