Functional French, Tuesday, Period 2

By the time he got to the classroom, Henry was dressed fairly normally and had washed his face and hands.

He counted all of this as an accomplishment.

"We're talking about shopping for clothes today," he said. "I could spend the hour talking about the history of haute couture -- here, have a handout -- but that strikes me as a pretty boring way to spend a day." A beat, during which Henry could practically hear his friend Gomez laughing at him. "We're playing dress-up instead."

He passed out a vocabulary sheet, and gestured to a stack of French fashion magazines he'd requisitioned from the library.

"Spend as long as you want looking through these, then put together an outfit from the racks of clothes at the back of the room. Talk to each other in French about what you're picking out."

Rilla flipped through the clothing looking very, very lost.

Effy had a... very specific way of dressing, that didn't quite match what she was finding in the racks and magazines, so the more interesting way to go with this activity was to watch other people. Subject of her observation at the moment, was Rilla.

"Not your style?" she asked after a moment, watching the other girl from just over the other side of the rack.

Okay yes, she was supposed to be speaking in French. Maybe in a minute.

Rilla shook her head, wide-eyed. "This wouldn't even pass as undergarments at home," she said.

Also not in French.

... Heaven help Jono, he was looking at button-downs. And neckties. He didn't even have enough neck left for a necktie, did he?

//Magazines it is, then.//

Because there was no way in hell he was changing his clothing in the middle of class, no.

Oh, Rilla was going to get on so well with Effy's hot pants when she eventually stepped around the rail.

She switched to French briefly, keeping it simple. "Like anything?" Just because they wouldn't be decent at home, didn't mean she couldn't like them.

Clothes. Emma was in heaven.

She was browsing through the racks, putting outfits together and discarding them almost as quickly. She eventually put together a few options she found satisfactory -- that were not her normal choices of blue or white, thank you -- and was rather wishing they got to keep the spoils of today's class.

Rilla found the highest necked shirt out of the rack and held it up. "//Pretty!//"

Well, high-necked.

Effy took that moment to slip around the rail and take a closer look.

Well, it was... conservative. Which didn't really correlate with pretty that strongly, in general. "But not that interesting," she noted.

"Well, no," Rilla admitted. "But it has lovely lace!"

"Closest to the sort of thing you'd normally wear?" Effy asked, reaching out to idly touch the sleeve.

Rilla looked down at the skirt that touched the top of her boots and the long-sleeved shirt she was wearing. "Yes," she admitted. "At home, pants are considered risque."

"But this isn't home." Which meant not sticking to whatever social conventions she usually did. Had to be more fun that way. "Time to branch out, yeah?"

"Maybe," Rilla said slowly. "Do you have suggestions?"
