"Yo, Rookies!" Reno took this opportunity to stick his tongue out as his students, yes. Don't knock it. Just smile and nod. "Today, we're gonna talk about a subject that's real near and dear to my heart. Downtime, yo."

Reno spoke only of the most important things, yes.

"Now, I dunno where you're all gonna go once you get outta this school. I don't know if you're going to be workin' some McJob at some cheap Mooby's ripoff where every now and again you gotta deal with special charity events and annoying clowns and junk, or if you're gonna go and take a runnin' leap into somethin' big and rough and dirty. Maybe a military job. Maybe politics." A small smirk at that. People were welcome to try to convince him that politics weren't dirty. He'd laugh at them and then offer to introduce them to his former boss. "Fact is, wherever you go, unless you're freakishly lucky, the work ain't gonna always be easy. You're gonna learn to appreciate the downtime that you get, or you're gonna break yourself by buryin' yourself in too deep all the time, yo."

Oh, he was so pointedly not looking at Elena right now.

"This kinda goes hand-in-hand with last week's class, zoto. It's a matter of knowin' your limits, or bein' able to listen to your superiors if they go ahead and tell you where they are, yo. So I'm gonna give you all a few scenarios to work with, and I want you to tell me what it is you'd do under those circumstances."

Just shooting the shit!

Where Reno rambles. Are you surprised? Honestly?

Read over each scenario that Reno has presented you with, and then discuss between yourselves what you would do in each situation. Is there a right answer here? Is there a wrong one?

You've been working your ass off for the company, running all around the globe in pursuit of a potentially dangerous individual that they want to get their hands on. After several weeks of this, you and the two higher-ups that you've been travelling with stop off in a resort town, and you decide now is a great time to book yourself some vacation time. After all, it isn't like you're going to get out here often, right? The three of you hit up a bar, and you get right to work, enjoying your vacation.

... Which is when a representative from the company you work for comes running in, saying that they've got a lead as to the whereabouts of that guy you've been hunting down. The two more experienced people you're there with seem unconcerned. A lead is nice, but they'll hunt it down later. Right now, they're on vacation. But it's right there, almost within your grasp! What do you do?

Flipside. You're one of the two senior employees whose Rookie has just taken off to do the job that they tried to pull you back from your vacation for. Fine, your Rookie's a big kid, they can handle themselves, right? ... Nope, wrong. You get word a little later that they've gone and gotten themselves kidnapped by your target, after lecturing you about how unprofessional you are.

So. Do you run off to save their ass? To what lengths do you go to get your Rookie back, if you do? And then, how many years is it going to take for them to be able to live it down?

(Hint, Elena never will.)

So, one of your higher-ups has taken to disappearing to head off and do his own thing, when normally after your shift ends, you'd head off to go drinking with the other folks from work to talk about the events of the day. This wouldn't be an issue, usually. After all, this particular guy isn't exactly a social butterfly. But his partner, your trainer, asks you to tail his friend, because taking off to do his own thing when he could be spending time with you guys just isn't like him, really.

Do you agree to spy on someone who has seniority over you because your trainer insisted? Or is what he does in his off-time simply not anybody's business but his own, even if it has his partner concerned?

You're off-duty again, spending time with your usual riffraff group from work. The coworker who can easily drink the whole lot of you under the table (you wussy) has had a few too many, mentions that he's way behind on his paperwork, and he's been ducking calls from the boss as a result. What do you do? Call the boss and narc? Or make him buy the next round of drinks as blackmail?

Who are going to be Rookies forever, damn it.

Who totally didn't pull these scenarios out of personal experience or anything, no. Why?

.......... Summer would be so awesome if we could keep the pretty green leaves without the baking-out-the-brains aspect of it all.

Also, I owe the blonde TA so much for helping me kick-start my brain halfway through the OCD here, because without her help, I'd still be sitting here and drooling at my monitor.

Karla snorted when Reno mentioned politics being dirty. Of course they were! Anyone who thought differently was welcome to take a walk through Glacia sometime.

Chloe Saunders

Yeah, Chloe had no arguments as to whether politics were dirty or not. She had seen politics in action at Lyle House.

Chloe was quiet for most of this discussion as she went over things in her mind. She could see both possibilities of action. She knew what she would do and she knew what Derek would do.

"I t-take my lead from the more experienced men that I'm w-with. If t-they t-think that's it's much b-better to wait, then, I wait with t-them."

She couldn't say if she'd be drinking in the bar with her co-workers as she had never had alcohol before. She could think of other things to do on vacation.

"If it's m-my Rookie that has gotten into t-trouble, then what happens to t-them is my responsibility," Chloe finally said. "I would go off to s-save t-them and do whatever I felt that I had to do in order to get my Rookie back s-safely." She paused. "T-then I would p-probably kick their ass for running off and getting themselves into s-such a s-situation in the first place.

It was probably a really funny mental image to imagine Chloe beating up anybody.

. . . yeah, like Tahiri was ever going to argue with the dirtiness of the military or politics. Please.

Okay, maybe she paid an extra bit of attention to the warning about breaking yourself . . .

Makita ~~you said shooting!~~

The only politics that Makita engaged in were the occasional political assassinations of enemy military commanders, so she wasn't going to pretend it wasn't dirty. Everything in life was dirty, that's just how things went.

"Drag the moron who's blurting out information into a corner, since you don't know if your target has spies in the area, remind them that they're a moron, and find out what the lead is," Makita replied. "Once you've got the information, then make the judgment call."

Makita was just going to take a moment to feel smug. She had a rookie and he followed her orders just fine. Mostly because Dushka had a horrible crush on her, but still. He was a good kid.

"Is it 'saving' them if they're grounded to fetch-and-carry work for the next lifetime?" she asked. "And no, they never live it down."

"If it's got his partner concerned, his partner should be the one doing the tailing." This was even a question? "Because if something goes down, who's word are they going to accept? Yours, or your superior?"

"He buys!" For the next week, actually. Makita didn't have many scruples when it came to getting people to feed her.
