Romance 101, Wednesday, Period 4 -- Class 2

"All right, today we're going to talk about" -- Drake snapped his fingers and there was the appropriate sound effect -- "the First Date. Yeah, they can be terrifying. And exciting. The key is just to relax and be yourself. And if it doesn't work out" -- cue another sound effect -- "at least you tried.

"If you're already known the person for awhile, you've got an advantage in knowing what they like to do. If you don't, try to get an idea from their friends. If you're completely in the dark, go for something like dinner and a movie, but make sure you have a back-up plan in case your date doesn't eat the kind of food at your first restaurant of choice. Try a hike and a picnic, or spend some time at the beach or at a zoo, or maybe a museum or art gallery. Creativity is a plus, but don't go too overboard, or you'll have a tough act to follow for the second date.

"Two things are the most important to remember: be yourself. Don't work too hard to impress your date. You want them to like you for you, not someone you're pretending to be. And have a sense of humor. Something is probably going to go wrong -- you'll spill a drink, you'll lose your tickets, you'll set your date on fire -- but if you can laugh it off, you'll be able to relax and have a good time.

"Now, I want you to grab a partner and pretend you're going out on a first date. Decide where you're going to go, then act like you're really there." Drake grinned, and added, "Try to pair up with someone you don't know already so you really get that awkward effect."

Wow. First dates sounded complicated. Karla was suddenly glad she'd been friends with George and Leda before their respective first dates had happened. How did people do it the other way?

Either way, she was taking diligent notes.

Karla looked around for someone she didn't know in the class to try the assignment with.

Oh, yes, hiking was so very romantic, take it from someone who tromped all over the Midlands.

All this lecture did was confirm in Cara's mind that this teacher was deranged, though not at deranged as the Australian one.

Richard would probably like some of these inane ideas though.

Leaning back against a handy table, Cara glanced around for a partner for this bizarre exercise.

At least the pairing up with someone she didn't know part should be easy enough.

Ahahaha oh first dates. I am pretty sure Bobby's is right up at the top of the list of Most Awkward Ever. *sads about missing class*

Angela, never the sort of girl to turn down fun and harmless flirting, would probably agree.

She was also there and would be so thrilled to help play at someone's date if the numbers worked that way. There might not be much first date awkwardness from her... but she was calling that a good thing.

Edmund was quite confident he could handle this class. At least for this week. For one, he'd conquered the first date. It was everything that came after that that was the problem. His confidence didn't stop him from paying very close attention to the lecture.

Edmund only knew a handful of people in the class, and even then he didn't know them well. Oh look! The awkward part of the first date was already underway.

The whole idea of a first date had Chloe wanting to hide.

She looked around for a partner, wondering if any of the others felt as awkward and out of place as she did?

The whole concept of a first date had Chloe wondering if there was a way for her to become invisible in her chair. She took notes, but she was pretty sure that she would never use them.

Rosalind was peculiarly certain that whoever had placed her inadvertently in this class was laughing at her.

She sat, with her back straight and eyes forward and did her absolute best to look like this was entirely beneath her.

Which is was, really, considering she had no time to use this sort of thing and it was not required for her job. Sigh.

Ben silently mouthed "set your date on fire"?

At least a date with Tahiri had never gone that badly.
