Flight Club: Flight Shed, Monday After Classes

"Hey, everybody," Tahiri said, raising a hand in greeting; the time disparity hadn't thrown her off too badly, all things considered, and she looked in good spirits. "I hope it wasn't too quiet around here over the weekend. If it was, well, maybe the first sim option you've got today will make up for it. You've got an experimental Bell X-1 for your atmospheric craft today, which according to the research I've done is the first Earth manned aircraft to successfully break the speed of sound."

Not all that long ago, either, which still amused her. Really, Earth tech? Really?

"As for your spaceflight option . . ." Her expression turned sheepish, and she rubbed at the back of her neck. "I was trying to set up a scenario in Ben's uncle's ship --" this with some effort not to look amused until she noticed Leia didn't seem to be around -- "but for some reason it keeps giving me this flying Winnebago instead. Um . . . try not to overshoot the planet and crash-land, okay? I can definitely speak from experience when I say crash-landing is no fun. Well, maybe sometimes it is, but I'm not supposed to endorse it."

She read over the overview of both crafts' controls from her datapad (not without a significant amount of comical face-making over the flying Winnebago's schematics) and as an afterthought, added, "Oh, by the way -- if any of you are interested in seeing what an actual X-Wing snubfighter looks like, come talk to me; I've got one in the junkyard."

... A Winnebago?

Seriously?

Actually, Warren thought that was kind of awesome. In a ridiculous sort of way.

... Okay, so, the Bell X-1 looked pretty awesome?

But the Winnebago had room for Warren's wings. And, in some twisted sort of way, it was still a spacecraft, which made it awesome by default. Mostly.

Guess which option Warren had picked today.

Leia would be sad if she missed flying the Falcon. ;)

Kurt was overjoyed by the sheer AWESOMENESS of something that looked like it couldn't move without falling apart being actually able to fly through space.

Also, he was totally making racecar noises as he drove the craft around as fast as it would go.

"It's insanely random," Warren said. And he said it in a way that suggested that he completely approved. "Flying doesn't have to be completely serious all of the time, does it?"

Warren nodded, crossing his arms over his chest and grinning right back. "Exactly. In a couple more weeks, there are going to be new kids crawling all over, and I'm sure they'll expect everything to be serious all over again until they've been around long enough to know better. You have to get your Winnebago campers out of your system now, before you're back to trying not to scare impressionable youths."

... Or something.

"No, I'm still pretty much as new as it gets at the moment," Warren admitted. "I was the quiet kid in the long coat, for the first few weeks."

Okay, more than a few.

"It's just about time for somebody else to be socially awkward in my place. I want to think that I'm growing out of that stage. It's too tiring to worry what other people think, all of the time."

"You know, I'm coming to learn that." Warren quirked a bit more of a smile, there. "I've met people here who already seem to know me from wherever they're from. That kind of helps. But even then... Everyone is different. Everyone. It's uncanny."

"Tell me about it," Warren sighed. "Apparently, somewhere out there, I go to the same school as a bunch of the people here did before they came here." A pause. "Or else I'm a lot older. But I haven't met any of them before coming here."

He shrugged a shrug to mirror hers, before adding, "And even then, keeping secrets was a big deal. When you're used to hiding almost everything about yourself, just coming out and showing it off is a kind of terrifying step."

A little. Sorta.
