Japanese Etiquette & Tradition, 3/22/10, Period 5

"Origami," Algren announced as the students took their places on the mats he'd laid out in the usual classroom.

You didn't need a Danger Shop for this. That would be silly. And so Algren had arranged the cushions on the floor in a semi-circle around a stack of square sheets of brightly colored paper set on a table in the middle of the room.

"The Japanese art of paper folding. In fact, that's what the name itself translates to. 'Ori' means folding, and 'kami' means paper." Forgive him for that. He's a linguist at heart and he has to translate things whenever the opportunity arises, or else he'll develop some sort of inferiority complex. "I'm not going to waste much of your precious paper folding time by lecturing about the origins of the art or the conventions of it, today. I'll just give you a handout with a selection of patterns, and let you go at it. If you need help with any of the folds, feel free to choose a partner, or to come speak to me."

Ino was here, of course, and maybe playing with a lot of wee paper flowers.

Shush. They amused her. Especially when she drew eyes on them.

Didi took red and white paper and settled down to make a whole flock of ladybugs.

OMG, origami. Have you seen some of the engineers who get into this? Making scorpions and millipedes and dragons and clocks and other craziness?

Kate picked green paper and decided to fold some monkeys. She had her reasons.

... Not for the color, though. That just happened.

Morgana looked over the instructions and tried to make some roses. Yes, her roommate would probably mock her, but she didn't care.

Ah! Momoko could do this! Well, she could do little fishies, which were cute, but after about three, she was leafing through the patterns Professor Algren had.

"Ah! Shortcake?!"

She grabbed some pink and white paper and began folding. And folding. And folding.
