Your intrepid club leaders didn't look particularly cheerful today, after the weekend. And Tahiri, in particular, looked like she was ready to climb into an actual cockpit and not just a simulation -- crisp flight suit, boots (ugh), very compact travel bag.

"Hey, guys," she said, hands tucked behind her back. "After this weekend we could probably use a pretty easy day, huh?"

Ben kept sneaking glances at her outfit, looking unhappy. "Or possibly a chance to shoot things in a safe environment," he added. Which he really wanted to do. "So our land-based option today is speeder bikes," he said, then went through the basic controls of one.

"You'll like those," Tahiri added, going for cheerful and missing by a few centimeters. "If you think you're up for it, today's spaceflight option is one that isn't actually from our galaxy, even though the ship looks kind of similar to some of our snubfighters . . . it's a Viper Mark II." It was her turn to go over the controls there, which took a while; the Mark II wasn't known for having a technologically advanced instrument panel. "The tricky thing about these is they don't carry lasers. Those guns carry actual ammo. Well -- simulated actual ammo, anyway, so it'll have a different kind of kick. Just keep that in mind while you're shooting things, okay?"

Ben nodded. "Have fun, guys."

. . . they had to do it sometime this week. Just to maintain the balance of things.

It was totally out of a sense of Jedi obligation. Really.

Oh, that would totally fly if Anakin decided to make an issue of this.

Ben finally pulled back for breath. "Well, I guess you're not going to forget about me."

Tahiri reached up to touch his cheek, and if hers were a little flushed . . . shh.

"If you seriously thought I would, I'd tell you exactly how stupid you were."

"I'd love to expand my Tusken vocabulary," he said solemnly.

. . . yeah, she wouldn't be teaching him any of the Yuuzhan Vong words.

"Oh, I think it's the nicer things you ought to know now," she replied with equal solemnity. "You've probably heard all the worse words from me already."

Ben grinned. "I'll trade you the Huttese curses Granddad tosses around..."

"I think that sounds like a deal," Tahiri agreed. "But still. Don't go and be stupid like that, okay? I'll miss you a lot. Even if I might not be able to bring you back a souvenir."

"Just come back," Ben said, some of the worry he felt showing in his eyes.

She couldn't promise that. She never could, and she was pretty sure he knew it, and that didn't make it any easier, so she curled into him again. "You can't get rid of me that easily, you know."

"Good," Ben said, hugging her tightly. "I'll miss you," he murmured in her ear.

"I'll miss you too," Tahiri answered, not letting go just yet. "Work on that ice cream thing for me, okay?"

"I will," he promised, kissing her forehead. "Shoot straight?"

"Always," Tahiri replied, giving him the best smile she could manage. "I'll even fly fast, just for you."

Ben sent her a quick wave of encouragement through the Force. "Good. How are you getting home? Shuttle or portal?"

"Portal," she answered, sending a pulse of affection back. "For starters, anyhow. I'm meeting up with your aunt and uncle first, and the less of a trail I leave, the better."

"Any idea where you're ultimately heading?" he asked.

She wasn't lying if she said, "No idea yet." She knew her immediate destination, but as for where she went from there, she was leaving that to the Force. "Not right into the warzone though, I can tell you that much."

Some of the stress left Ben's eyes. "Good."

Seeing that, Tahiri wasn't going to point out that it could very well end up that way anyhow. That was just how things went.

"Hey," she said lightly -- more lightly than she felt, because she never wanted to miss out on the chance to say it now. "Love you. No moping on my behalf, okay?"

Yeah, that'd work.

"I don't mope," Ben replied with a smile, even though he knew that wasn't true. "Love you too."

Tahiri's snort was oh so very eloquent. Well, it was -- it just wasn't terribly gracious.

"Portal'll be ready soon. I should get going," she said reluctantly.

Ben nodded. "Call if there's any downtime?"

Ben, she'll need both hands when she leaves.

Oh, sure. If she was conscious when she had that downtime. This was Tahiri; the odds were pretty split.

She paused, looked down at their hands, and grinned. "Were you planning on keeping that for me?"

Ben had the grace to look embarrassed. "Oh." Then he grinned back. "Skywalker thing. I have to keep one hand as collateral."

"Can't you just take a voucher for it?" Tahiri asked, laughing. "I'm going to need that, you know."
