Flight Club - Flight Shed, Monday (After Classes)

Your intrepid club leaders didn't look particularly cheerful today, after the weekend. And Tahiri, in particular, looked like she was ready to climb into an actual cockpit and not just a simulation -- crisp flight suit, boots (ugh), very compact travel bag.

"Hey, guys," she said, hands tucked behind her back. "After this weekend we could probably use a pretty easy day, huh?"

Ben kept sneaking glances at her outfit, looking unhappy. "Or possibly a chance to shoot things in a safe environment," he added. Which he really wanted to do. "So our land-based option today is speeder bikes," he said, then went through the basic controls of one.

"You'll like those," Tahiri added, going for cheerful and missing by a few centimeters. "If you think you're up for it, today's spaceflight option is one that isn't actually from our galaxy, even though the ship looks kind of similar to some of our snubfighters . . . it's a Viper Mark II." It was her turn to go over the controls there, which took a while; the Mark II wasn't known for having a technologically advanced instrument panel. "The tricky thing about these is they don't carry lasers. Those guns carry actual ammo. Well -- simulated actual ammo, anyway, so it'll have a different kind of kick. Just keep that in mind while you're shooting things, okay?"

Ben nodded. "Have fun, guys."

Ben gave her a smile that almost reached his eyes. "Come back with all of your parts intact. May the Force be with you."

Yeah, even if his aunt and grandfather were around, he was getting a kiss today. Just in case, even if this was practically a standard script every time one of them was headed out.

"Check, and check. Love you, Ben."

So Tahiri was clinging a little bit. Shh.

And let's not dwell too much on how two teenagers have a standard script for heading off to potentially get shot at.

Ben was more than happy to cling and to ignore his relatives. "Love you too."

Or how they took it for granted that there was nothing weird about having a standard script for that.

"You'll be all right while I'm gone?" Tahiri asked, still holding on tightly.

Ben was quiet for a moment, weighing the evidence. "I'll find something to keep me busy," he finally offered.

"Of course you will." Tahiri -- who knew perfectly well that 'all right' was always relative where Ben was concerned -- gave him an indulgent half-smile. "It's what you always do."

"And then you'll come back and we'll go for ice cream," he said.

Mmm. Repression.

Tahiri refused to think about how much ice cream he'd eat if she didn't make it back.

"Don't try any new flavors without me, okay?"

"I won't," Ben promised. "Need me to put any into your bag?"

Eww, Ben, no.

"I'm not carrying a refrigeration unit around with me," Tahiri retorted, unable to help a little laugh. "And now I've gone and given you ideas, so by the time I get back you'll have come up with a portable ice cream machine I can put on my equipment belt."

"It's the something that will keep me busy," Ben said, leaning in for another kiss.

"When you're not driving Ender or Karla crazy," Tahiri supplied before wrapping her arms around him to kiss him again.

Very, very thoroughly, just in case.

Ben had no problem with that idea at all. AT ALL.

He'd remember that his grandfather and tiny aunt were in the room in a little while.

Well, shh, Tahiri wasn't reminding him.

Nor was she reminding either of them that this was probably not appropriate club-leader behavior.

Priorities, people.

Well, they'd miss making out at reserves tomorrow, so...

. . . they had to do it sometime this week. Just to maintain the balance of things.

It was totally out of a sense of Jedi obligation. Really.

Oh, that would totally fly if Anakin decided to make an issue of this.

Ben finally pulled back for breath. "Well, I guess you're not going to forget about me."

Tahiri reached up to touch his cheek, and if hers were a little flushed . . . shh.

"If you seriously thought I would, I'd tell you exactly how stupid you were."

"I'd love to expand my Tusken vocabulary," he said solemnly.

. . . yeah, she wouldn't be teaching him any of the Yuuzhan Vong words.

"Oh, I think it's the nicer things you ought to know now," she replied with equal solemnity. "You've probably heard all the worse words from me already."

Ben grinned. "I'll trade you the Huttese curses Granddad tosses around..."

"I think that sounds like a deal," Tahiri agreed. "But still. Don't go and be stupid like that, okay? I'll miss you a lot. Even if I might not be able to bring you back a souvenir."

"Just come back," Ben said, some of the worry he felt showing in his eyes.

She couldn't promise that. She never could, and she was pretty sure he knew it, and that didn't make it any easier, so she curled into him again. "You can't get rid of me that easily, you know."

"Good," Ben said, hugging her tightly. "I'll miss you," he murmured in her ear.
