Love & Romance, Hollywood Style [Period 4, Class 4]

Drake was grinning as he started the class today. He'd had a date with a goddess last night, after all, so he had reason to be in a good mood. "Last week was love and death," he said, "so how about something a little more lighthearted this week? Love conquers all. You know the story. Boy meets girl, boy kidnaps girl, boy and girl obviously have the major hots for each other but instead act like they hate each other, boy loses girl, boy finds girl, girl loses boy, girl finds boy, boy loses girl, and the two angels trying to bring them together resort to bloodshed and violence to make them live happily ever after." Drake paused. "Okay, maybe I exaggerate the lightheartedness."

He snapped his fingers and started some clips playing on the projector. "In meta for A Life Less Ordinary, two angels are ordered to bring together Robert Lewis and Celine Naville. If they fail, they'll be banished back to Earth, because all the divorces and unhappy marriages are ruining their record of uniting couples in eternal bliss, and god is a bitch of a boss.

"So, Robert is a janitor and a hopeless dreamer," Drake went on. "Celine is a spoiled rich girl. Robert works as a janitor for Celine's father, and when he's fired and replaced by a machine, he flips out and demands his job back from Celine's father at gunpoint. He ends up taking Celine hostage -- by her doing, because she's bored and wants attention. Celine tries to guide Robert in the art of kidnapping while they bicker and fight and have an obligatory musical number. The two angels pursue them, disguised as bounty hunters, and come up with the brilliant plan of putting Robert and Celine in constant jeopardy to try to get them to fall in love.

"In the end," Drake concluded, "Robert and Celine do fall in love, and the angels' jobs are saved, though a minor miracle is needed to get everyone through it alive. So what do you think? Can love conquer all? Do you think Robert and Celine would've fallen in love without the divine influence? Do the angels pushing them together make their love any less real?"

I so <3 this movie. Pity Ewan doesn't drop trou like he normally does in non-Star Wars movies, though. (Pity he didn't in Star Wars, too.)

Celine: So you're telling me that successful relationships are made in heaven? Not founded on the daily practicality of two people being prepared to tolerate the imperfections of one another?
Robert: It's not successful relationships, Celine. It's love. And it comes from a strange and wonderful place that we don't know about.
Celine: So you also reject the idea that love is merely an emotional adaptation to a physical necessity?
Robert: Completely.
Celine: Are you serious?
Robert: Fate intervenes in people's lives. In ours, for instance. Fate brought us together. It kept us together. We were destined for one another.
Celine: Fate had a pretty strange way of making its point.
Robert: But that's part of the beauty of it. It's inexplicable, unpredictable and absolutely beyond control or understanding.
Celine: But you nearly got killed.
Robert: But I didn't. And here we are.
Celine: Do you have any substantial evidence to back all this?
Robert: None at all.
Celine: And you realize that it's absurd and irrational?
Robert: I know that.
Celine: Then why do you believe it?
Robert: Because, Celine, I'm a dreamer.
Celine: Well, I guess that makes two of us.

Oh man, Priestly loved that movie. Especially the bit where the guy's boss at the diner is all like "Dude. You will never in a million years have another chance at a woman like that, you completely freaking moron." Best speech ever.

Yeah, he wasn't really taking notes or anything. More staring dreamily off into space as he pictures Cameron Diaz in a towel.

Pretty much everything after she storms all freaked out into the farm house.

But mostly the Claymation, omg.

I had a friend in college who insisted that the whole movie attained this amazing level of genius if you skipped the whole first scene in Heaven. Apparently, the first time he went to see it, he and his friends got to the theater late and thus spent the whole movie going "but wait? Why are these two psychos messing with Ewan and Cameron in the first place?!"

Priestly shrugged. "Don't see why the hell not. The angels weren't waving a magic wand saying 'love each other', they just manipulated physical events. Any emotions attached are all Robert and Celine."
