Horror 101, Monday

It had been an incredibly long two weeks.

Not that Mitchell had suffered from the gremlins this weekend: he hadn't come back until late last night, and for some reason, the creatures - like most Fandom weirdness - had given him a wide berth upon sight.

He wasn't going to complain.

"I know you've all had a rough weekend," he started, "So I'm going to make a deal. If you feel the need to talk about what you've done or what's happened to you in the past couple of days, you can. If you don't, I've got a copy of the worst film ever made and a generous supply of tea and coffee."

A beat.

"Either way, I think we're covering horror well enough."

Another beat.

"And yes, Kate, everyone's encouraged to talk through the film. Come on."

This whole 'focusing on other people's problems' thing was getting a bit desperate on his part.

"I think we can shoot for tonight, see if that works," Alex said after a moment. "If not, Wednesday's the backup. I can get with drinking as quickly as possible."

She gave him a tired smile. "I don't like gremlins," she said. "They bite and they smell." She tilted her head. "Are you all right?"

"And hates everyone else? Not fair." A dramatic sigh. "I had to fight myself out of the Perk, you know."

"I was off the island for the weekend."

Most of it, anyway.

"So I'm fine. I'm good. Look after yourself, all right?"

Mitchell's eyebrows went up. "I thought the island was crawling with these massively overcompensating warrior types."

She smiled again and nodded. "I will, and you too." She was relieved to see that he seemed all right and bite free.

"Well, they're never around when you need them." Or when you're unlucky enough to wander around town during an invasion without a clue of what's going on. "And it's not like I was alone or anything."

"So some benefactor did swoop in, did they?"

He was a master at combining amusement with concern.

Drinking probably wasn't a good idea with recent head trauma. Jack decided he didn't care, and nodded in agreement.

"I'll come find you tonight if I can."

"Not so much swoop in as he was already with me. We were supposed to have a coffee date thing."

Kate had her own private amusement at the phrase 'swoop in'. Because Warren really could've done that.

Mitchell's eyebrows made a valiant play for each other in the middle of his forehead. "It's obvious they really don't want you nosing around the Perk." he said, with a hint of disbelief.

"I'll make sure I'm there," Alex promised, nodding.

"Apparently so." She poked at her arm. Her skin was kind of itchy under the bandage. "Didn't see any of the staff around. I hope they're okay."

"You can go and check on them when class is over," he said. "They might actually be glad to see you."

"Yeah, I was kind of thinking abut doing that," she replied with a half-smirk. "I can tell them that I took extra care not to break anything when I was swinging a chair around."

"And with that," Mitchell said, snapping his fingers, "They might even serve you a decaf for your trouble."

"Oh, eww. That would be just mean of them."

No love for decaf from the Gregson girl. How surprising.

"Baby steps, Kate. That's what you get for offending the waitstaff."

"Ugh. Yeah, I know, I was dumb and now I'm paying for it," Kate said, shaking her head. "I miss living in the city. There were more coffee shops."

"Baltimore's not that far," he pointed out, settling back. "If you really wanted to, you could look past your doorstep for your drinks."

Ah, double-edged phrasings.

"Even I won't go to Baltimore just for coffee," she snorted. Then she brightened up a little. "Although I'm gonna start going there regularly, starting this week."

"The whole dancing thing, right?" Hey, Mitchell might've been old, but his memory was still fresh, thank you very much.

"The whole dancing thing, right?"

He might be old, but his memory was still fresh, yeah.

"Exactly. I met with the instructor lady on Friday and she liked me."

And she was totally cheerful and smug about that.
