Oceanography [Thursday, Week 9, Period Five]

Summer had leftover Halloween candy sitting on the desk in the front. Her students were more than welcome to snag as much or as little as they wanted. She was fairly certain she wasn't the only one who'd had a candy coma, so to speak.

"I hope you all had a great Halloween," Summer smiled, leaning against the desk.

"Last week we discussed the relationship between the ocean and the sun. Today we'll talk about the moon," she explained. "The moon has a smaller mass than the sun and it has the advantage over the sun. Its effects are stronger than the sun at times."

Summer continued, smiling lightly. "The tides, as you might know, are the rising and falling of the seawater. The moon's gravitational forces can be strong enough to interrupt the ocean's balance on earth. Since the moon's distance from earth varies, so does the height of the tides. The closer the moon is, the stronger its gravitational pull. And when the moon is far away from the earth, the tides aren't as strong."

She paused, collecting her thoughts. "The sun balances the moon's influence depending on their distance from one another. The sun can negate the moon's effect on the tides because it has the stronger gravitational pull."

Summer passed out a couple of handouts on the subject, her lecture complete.

[OOC: OCD coming up. Sorry about the late post. Had to pick up my uncle from the hospital -- minor leg surgery. Again, I apologize!]

Candy coma? Sign Anemone up. She was just going to stuff her face and keep taking notes.

Ooh, candy.

Joolushko was taking notes while thinking how having only the one measly little moon was just another thing wrong with this planet. The chocolate at least more than balanced out the lack of satellite objects.
