Oceanography [Thursday, Week 8, Period Five]

There were a couple pieces of candy resting on each of the students' desks. Summer was in the Halloween spirit, seeing as it was only a few days away. She couldn't believe how time had flown by.

"I hope you all had fun at Homecoming," Summer smiled warmly. "Today, we're going to talk about the relationship between the sun and the ocean. It's more intricate than you might think," she chuckled. Summer passed out handouts to the students, which had an overview

"As I'm sure you're aware, the sun is important to the ocean for numerous reasons. The heat from the sun helps warm the water to sustain most marine life. It also helps energize the ocean currents and waves," Summer explained. She paused, pulling up a picture of the ocean before continuing. "Marine plants also use the rays from the sun to make their own food. It's a process known as photosynthesis. Each organism on the food chain relies on photosynthesis."

Summer switched to another picture. "Did you ever wonder why the ocean looks blue and then it seems to change color? Our eyes are used to seeing blue. The amount of light and ocean particles may have something to do with it," she said. "Blue wavelengths of color pass through great depths of the ocean, while other wavelengths of color are absorbed more quickly."

Summer chose another picture to display. "And sometimes, the ocean will look murky because sediment has been stirred up to the surface by strong storms and wind currents. And plant life can make the ocean look green due to over abundance."

"I hope you guys have a good Halloween, if you're planning on doing anything," Summer grinned. There was some extra candy in a bowl next to her. "Feel free to take some more candy as you leave." She had more than enough to spare.

[OOC: OCD coming is up.]
