Care for Magical Creature; Monday, Fourth Period [ 09/21 ].
Before class, Minsc was at the blackboard, making another brave attempt at writing something on it. It was a slow process; he got through the word Faery fairly well, but then ran into trouble with the next one. Physinog-- Nope, scratch that. Pyysilo..crap. Physikalo--.
With an appropriate grunt of annoyance, Minsc erased the whole thing and just wrote Parts of Faeries.
"Parts of faeries!" he announced happily to the class, especially since physiognomy was a difficult word to say, anyway. "That is our topic for today! An interesting one, because, as I'm sure you understand by now, faeries are incredibly fluid and changeable, so talking about their parts can be difficult! After all, in their more natural form, they are but pure energy, and a lot of the shapes they take are usually just illusions in our minds, though they are expressive of the true nature of the faery. They like to immitate certain human ideas that match up with their essence. Today, I will give you a list of human things that faeries imitate, and we will discuss what they are trying to convey to us by resembling or appearing with these things."
"Then, we will look at some pressed faeries and try to pinpoint a few important features and try to interpret what type of faery they might be. A word, however, or two about faery pressing," because he could already see some of the students getting....shall we say...wibbly? "It is an ancient are practised by faery enthusiasts to try to capture their essence on paper for that they can be studied. Hardly accurate, but it is thus far the only method that works at all! Capturing faeries proves difficult due to their nature, but I must assure you, faery pressing does not hurt the faeries. It may look like it in some, but that is because they are trying to play on sympathies! In fact, I think most of them kind of like it! Just remember: they are ephemeral beings or pure energy. The damages seen are merely what our eyes see."
"Keep in mind the following important parts:
*WINGS: Not for sustaining flight like birds or bugs. As energy, faeries don't need wings to fly and have them mostly just for show, but remember! Thought through form! The form of faery wings gives us clues about each faery's function. So be sure to look at those and try to figure out what certain wings may signify.
*EYES: You've heard about eyes being the windows to the soul, yes? Well, faery eyes are more like mirrors to your soul. Pretty disquieting if you are not at ease with yourself. Their eyes can reveal great fathomless depths of the universe, wisdom, hilarity, sorrow, and compassion well beyond our mortal understanding. Try having a look at some of these eyes and see if you can see it.
*HORNS: If a feary has horns, you're in luck! The horns appear to recall up ancient guides between the worlds, as many of them were, indeed, horned as well. The faery horn represents renewal, regrowth, and rebirth, a physical manifestation of intuitive animal powers. Curved horns are reminiscent of the female C resent Moon, and faeries with them usually have great healing powers."
*EARS: If a faery has red ears, it is a distinctive sign of a highly supernatural nature, so look out for that. Even if you see red ears on something more normal, be careful! It is likely a sign of faery work!"
"So keep these things in mind as we evaluate our faeries. One last thing before we get to work! Yesterday was a faery holiday! This one involves no animals, and the ladies will hopefully see what I meant when I said to wear manageable clothing today! It's Over Hill and Dale Day, where hill faeries and dale faeries get together for great big leapfrog tournaments! It is very simple if you do not know how to play. Participants vault over each other's stooped backs. The first participant rests hands on knees and bends over, which is called giving a back.
The next player places hands on the first's back and leaps over by straddling legs wide apart on each side. On landing he stoops down and a third leaps over the first and second, and the fourth over all others successively. On and on. A lot of fun!"
"So let us get started!"
