Studio Art, Friday, Period Four, Week Two

Steve launched straight into this week's class. "A landscape is--you can probably guess this one. A representation of the...landscape." He grinned. "Okay, so that's kind of a weak definition. A landscape is a representation of a natural scene. Common subjects of landscapes include beaches, forests, mountains, and snow scenes. Cityscapes aren't exactly natural, but they fall within the overall 'landscape' heading. This week we will be doing landscapes. Rather than have you look out the window to work, I have provided several reference photos. If you don't find any of them to your liking, you're welcome to use the computer lab or library to find another one, but that will cut into the time you can be drawing. These landscapes will be rendered in pastels, of which I have provided a choice of two types, oil and chalk, also known as 'soft' pastels. You may want to experiment and see how the two differ. You may also be wondering how pastels differ from crayons. Pastels are kind of...sophisticated crayons, I won't lie, but there are some differences. The pigment in pastels tends to powder and can come loose, so when you finish a work in pastels you should spray it with a fixative. If you've finished at the end of this class, I can do it for you then, but if you haven't and would like to continue work on your piece later, that's fine. So." He clapped his hands together. "Get to work."
