Applied Science, Monday, Period 1

"Welcome back," Tyler greeted his class, once they were all in their seats. Each lab table held a box about the size of a shoebox. "Today we're talking about the thought experiment called Schrodinger's Cat as an introduction to quantum mechanics. You have a handout on it and, since I'm apparently too lazy to read Wikipedia out loud today, we're also going to watch a short video on the whole shebang."

Once the video played, he briefly went over the meaning of the whole thing, pausing at the end for questions.

"Your mission now," he said, when he was done, "is to replicate the experiment. Some of those boxes have Beanie Baby cats in them; some don't. Pick one and try to decide if you have a cat or not, without touching the box."

Jonothon was absolutely there, and finding himself somewhat amused by the whole thing.

And secretly hoping that his box had a cat in it, yes.

Oh, Jonothon was already planning on solving this conundrum the purely scientific way.

By digging in his pocket for a quarter to flip.

Spock believed a tricorder would be of great value right about now, yes.

What this situation really called for was Layla Miller. Although that would probably require a bribe. Possibly a Beanie Baby Cat.

Dinah was staring at the box, trying to develop the psychic power of knowing about cats.

Ben figured that lifting the box using the Force would probably be cheating.

He was going to sit there and glance at it for a little while until he got a partner anyway.

"So," she said idly, "am I the only one who feels sorry for the poor cat? 'Cause I wouldn't want to live in a state of flux that was ultimately decided by being seen by someone else."

Jono tossed the coin into the air and then idly caught it again, raising an eyebrow at Ino. And then shrugging.

//I think I'd be more prone to feel sorry for the cat the longer the experiment wore on,// he noted. //Yer've got a 50/50 chance the thing's still alive now, but it'll drop down to nil after a few days of deliberation while the thing has no bloody air.//

Ewwww.

Ino wrinkled her nose. "Doesn't that, like, defeat the purpose of this whole mind game of 'is it alive or dead' then?"

Scientists were dumb in her opinion. Geez.

//I suppose in that case, it would,// Jono agreed, shrugging. //That one, at least, is a question that can be solved either with patience, or by opening the bloody box. So far as they know, the cat is alive and dead at the same time? Not bloody likely. That's what the word 'or' is all about.//

He tossed the coin in the air yet again.

//At least here, we just have to decide if there's a toy cat in there, or if there's not.//
