Studio Art, Friday, Period Four, Week Two

There was a slice of apple pie at each student's workstation today. "Good afternoon," Steve said. "Do not eat the pie. If you have already eaten your pie, it's not that big a deal. You'll just be drawing some crumbs on a plate. Today we'll be working on still lifes, which are works of inanimate objects that have been arranged out of their natural setting. A painting of a shell on the beach is not a still life, it is a landscape. A painting of a shell on a table, or a slice of pie on a plate in this case, is. The medium you'll be working in for these still lifes is pencil and paper. You can work in black and white or in color. You may be surprised by what colors you have to use to accurately depict your subject. Again, I'm not worried about skill level, just put in your best effort and have fun. Don't get frustrated." He paused. "When you finish your still life, or when the class period is over, whichever comes first, then you may eat the pie."

His sketch of his own slice of pie showed a certain blend of technique and talent. And restraint, since the pie had not yet been eaten by the end of class.

Cal ate the pie. After Rogers had explained to them not to. Not because he was a rebel, but because he simply figured a pie with a bite taken out of it would not only be delicious, but also make for a much more interesting picture.

Mmmm. Pie.

Cal could draw, there was no question about that. He could even draw so that most things were recognizable, which was an accomplishment. However, it was definitely not in his field of things he would consider himself particularly good at.

But he wanted to see good at it. So when it came down to drawing time, his focus was intently on his slice of pie with a bite taken out of it, hair falling forward into his face to create a little curtain to help contain the concentration.

Another reason to love having long hair again. It helped hide all those funny faces people made when they were really focusing on something.

Zach contemplated doing his picture of pie in charcoal -- but then remembered that he'd used most of what he had left the previous night.

Colors it was!

He started out with a rough pencil sketch, and then began inking, and then colored inks.

Shilo started sketching, trying to ignore the fact that the pie looked so freaking good.

She wondered if she'd lose points for doing something more cubist, in order to get herself to stop thinking how tasty it would be.
