Anyone Can Cook, Tuesday, Period 4

"Bonjour, class," Colette said from the front of the room, where she stood behind a table covered with cooking implements. "I hope that you will pay attention today. I should not like to have to capture your attention with a knife."

She was joking. Mostly.

"Today we will discuss cooking implements and good preparation in the kitchen, known as mise en place. This means 'things in their places.' This means that before you start to cook, the oven is hot, the herbs are torn, the vegetables and meat are sliced, and the oil is at hand. Cooking is hard, exact work. If you do not have everything ready to go before you need it, you will have a food critic come in at the wrong moment, and you will still be slicing the onions for his soup while he is sneering at the wine and scribbling down that the service at the restaurant has gone downhill and other orders are coming in and -" She stopped herself. "So you slice the onions before you do anything else, so they will be ready when you need them, oui?"

"The basic equipment to cook is a sharp knife to chop with, a pot to cook in, and a spoon to stir the post with. There are, of course, many, many other things you will want." She listed them off, going on at some length about the importance of stainless steel knifes and copper-bottomed pans.

"Our recipe for today is one of the first snacks I learned to cook when I was quite young," she finished. "Bananes au jambon, bananas rolled in ham. Use proper mise-en-place techniques, please, and you may of course eat what you make."

The recipe seemed simple enough. Layla settled down to slice the ham and cheese grating. She waited until the end to peel the bananas as she didn't want them to turn brown before she was done prepping the other ingredients.

In the end the dish looked a sloppy presentation-wise but the dish was done per the recipe.

Bananas. In ham.

As far as Emma was concerned, this was just more evidence that the entire school was insane.

This seemed easy enough. Well. He'd give it a shot, anyway.

That is if he could stop eating the banana long enough to actually cook them.

Helen carefully peeled, sliced and grated, then worked her way through the recipe. She wasn't sure how it would taste, but it did look just the way it was supposed to when it was done.

Kate took notes. A lot of this stuff was actually pretty new to her.

Joan wasn't sure how this would taste, but she followed all the directions and started in on her prep work.

Kate was good at following instructions, so cooking seemed to go pretty well this time.

While the bananas were in the oven, she attempted to memorize a monologue. Yes, someone was going to try out for the play.

"Yeah. Cereal," Chuck answered. He was getting weird flashbacks of French nannies at being referred to as 'Monsieur'. "I was just testing the bananas out. Making sure they were good."

Yes. That was what he was doing.

Priestly was there, making quick work of his own cooking and keeping an eye out for anyone who needed help.

And wondering just a little bit about French cuisine. Bananas and ham? Not a combo he would've thought of.

Re: Cooking [9/8]

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2009-09-08 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Liir got right to work, well used to the prep considering his time at the Cafe Fina. Of course, he'd started with a rather slapdash, home-cooking sort of wham-bam-thankyou-ma'am sort of manner, but the cutlery had soon shown him the error of his ways, as had the work volume.

So the bananas were peeled, the ham was sliced, the cheese was grated. The dish was prepared with precision and presented neatly, even somewhat artfully since he had the time.

...the hero worship was going strong.

There was something about the combination of bananas and ham that seemed weird, but if it was something their teacher had eaten and liked, he figured it couldn't be that bad.

To Sam, this was starting off easy. Grating cheese wasn't a problem, and he kind of enjoyed making sure the ham was cut in even slices.

Let's ignore the fact that his skills with a knife came from slicing up evil things, shall we?

Sookie had used bananas to cook, of course. And naturally, cheese. And ham.

But all together seemed a little strange.

Nevertheless, she dutifully followed the recipe given, taking extra care to make sure the bananas were all the same size.
