"Today you're going to avoid flying into black holes," Anakin said when the students arrived. "You're going to make the Kessel Run, though if I hear of any of you becoming drug runners--which was what this particular route was used for--you will be very, very sorry."

He flicked his hand towards the wall, where a two dimensional map of the 18-parsec run was illuminated. "The route takes you around The Maw--which is a series of black holes--and leads you through an uninhabitable—but far easier to navigate—area of space called The Pit. The Pit is an asteroid cluster encased in a nebula arm, which makes sensors and pilots go virtually blind. There's a high chance that pilots, weary from the long flight through real space, will crash into an asteroid."

He arched up an eyebrow. "And yes, I know that parsec is a unit of time. If you swing closer to the Maw, you can cut the distance, and thus the time of the flight. But more likely, you'll get sucked into a black hole and be crushed."

Anakin waved his hand, and the map was replaced by a picture of the ship they'd be flying. "This ship and its," he swallowed back an "irritating" "pilot, along with my son, made the run in just under 12 parsecs, which stands as the fastest time through. Climb into the Falcon, try not to hit asteroids, black holes or the ships that are chasing you."

Yes, it's a piece of junk. Things will break as you fly. It's part of the Falcon's charm.

Anakin made the run in 12. The people who survive generally take the full 18.

Most people don't survive.

Ender had absolutely no interest in going so fast he'd lose his life - what he was interested in was the time dilation, however, so he might have flown slightly closer than normal.

Well, for the few scant seconds he could manage it. He was going to have to ask Anakin Questions.

"Has there been any kind of study towards the effects of these black holes on the speed of passing spacecraft?"

Danny was aiming for 15, but miscalculated how close he got to one of the black holes and ended up crashing after only 4.

He left the flight simulator very sullenly, and skulked to the back corner of the flight shed. No triumphant exits today.

It is, in fact, a banthabell!

Someone would miss Jess a whole lot, thank you very much. Once again, he found himself wondering how people could fly like this and not get violently ill.

"Hello to you, too, Ender," Anakin said with a tiny smile. "And yes. Would you like copies?"

"If you wouldn't mind," Ender said, casting a look back towards the sim. "It might be useful."

"Planning on flying near black holes soon?" Anakin asked idly, pulling out his comlink.

"No, but my universe doesn't bend the laws of physics like yours does," he said, patiently. "Any research about space travel might help with the colonisation effort."

Anakin nodded, pressing a few buttons. "How far back do you want? Latest thoughts on black holes or early research?"

"It depends on how early," he said, "Obviously, we're aware that black holes exist, and we've theorised on them extensively - it's harder, later data that interests me."

"The Maw in particular has been studied pretty extensively," Anakin said. "It's a very popular place to hide something you don't want found. I'll send you those."

Peter would certainly miss Jess. Peter also knew that Jess was probably pretty annoyed about that.

Annja was not interested in doing this to one day become a drug runner, oh god no. However, one did wonder if she could somehow get the people that always seemed to be chasing her and the sword into deep space and throw them into the Maw.

Again with the big clumsy ships, Momoko thought with a sigh as she fired up the ship for her practice run. She started out slow, especially when pieces fell off and she hadn't even hit anything! "Agh! What was that? Was that important?"

She finally sped up, just out of fear she wouldn't make it before the poor thing fell apart. Oddly enough, it seemed to fly better the faster she pushed it. Oh, yeah. It wasn't pink, but she could grow to love this ship... if only it transformed into a giant robot, it would be perfect!

Momoko would totally have survived if it had been real, and she would gladly explain to anyone who asked that it was all because she ~~was distracted by finally being able to pilot something fast~~ hadn't noticed that asteroid until the last minute and the patrol ship was totally not there when she'd looked before she corrected course and if it had been real she totally would have been able to avoid the collision.
