"Good afternoon, class!" Minsc was, as usual, very excitable when his students came into the the Danger Shop this week, with an added side effect of being glad he had an afternoon workshop, all things consider. The setting looking an awful lot like the clearing they were in last week, but with an assortment of long-range weapons available. "Some of you may remember this class from last time! This is the class where we do buttkicking, but at a distance! Like last time, I noticed that many of you are already very proficient in swords. I am sure many of you also have a proficiency in range weaponry, too, but the range weapons is one of the reason we are called range-ers! It is also because we range over a wide range of land and have a wide range of knowledge and can kick a wide range of butt, and..."

Minsc paused, seemingly lost for a second in his own definition.

"It is a very versatile word," he concluded. On that point, anyway, because he started back up on the lesson.

"So here we have a collection of different range weapons. I know some people use guns and lasers, pew pew, but rangering is an older art, so we will use older weapons! We've got bows, crossbows, some very nice slings, and darts." And, yes, those last ones were big giant lawn darts. Last semester, it had been a mistake. This semester, he decided that they were far too awesome to ignore!

"I would not be surprised if some of you already have a proficiency in one of these long-range weapons already. If so, try one you're not as familiar with. Or, instead of just going for the targets, I can put you in a real battle with a beastie form the programming, and what you can do there is work on being able to fight an enemy who, unlike the targets, won't just stay put, so you'll have to work on potentially switching in and out between weapons for a more efficient kill!"

"Off to the side, there are also practise swords and staffs. If you are done with target practise, it is good to keep up your other work, and you may choose to spar with each other! I actually encourage this, as no ranger should get rusty! Well, then! Have at it! And if there are any questions, please just ask! TO ARMS!"

Kicking some butt.

If the objective of this class seems an awful lot like the objective from last class, that's because it is.

But with arrows instead!

If you expected the objective of this class to be much different from the objective last class, or even that this lesson would be any different from the lesson last session, you probably don't know Minsc that well.

There are plenty of weapons available, and an assortment of targets, of all shapes and sizes. Some are stationary, but may are also moving. There are quite a few that seem to take the form of gnolls. With MEAN ANGRY FACES, RAWR. Not that Minsc had a prejudice, or anything.

They'd get to that in a future week.

Minsc has also given ~~handwavey~~ lectures on how to properly use all the weapons for beginnings. The lawn darts, incidentally, just happened to consist of "THROW IT. REALLY, REALLY HARD."

Find target practise a little droll? Minsc has designated an area for more intrepid adventurers to come and fight "live" targets of beasties that they can shoot at and then fight!

Please note that these beasties might be a little Slow-Played. (Glitches in the system, right?).

Minsc is very encouraging to have people kick each other's butts as well as the butts of their enemies! Best way to keep your skills honed!

Both should remember this lesson from last session, so they could be of great help!

Because he is always there to be helpful and talky, too!

Even if he does kind of miss the singing. It was fun! Maybe he might still sing some more, anyway, just because he liked it and the world just seemed a better place with all that singing.

And I still want giant lawn darts to throw at people.

Arthur Pendragon

Arthur would have been remiss if he hadn't established Sir Minsc as the kind to repeat classes early on. Which was fine by him. The best physical skills, you picked up only after mindless repetition.

As his poor, bruised Monday morning students might attest to.

Well, this was always a good occasion to get some more crossbow practice in. Like last time, Arthur snagged the weapon, loaded it, and got to work.

His aim was still nearly perfect, and after a while, he switched to throwing knives just for the sport of it.

Oh, this wasn't good.

Kenshin had no idea how to use any of those weapons.

At all.

Kenshin eyed the ranged weapons, as if wondering which was the least likely to bite him.

Maybe he'd watch the other students for a little while. Just to see how the worked.

Now there was a look that Minsc was used to seeing. Fortunately, in this case, he was willing to address that look as well.

"Need a little help?" he offered. It was his job after all.

"Ano... I'm untrained in ranged weapons," Kenshin said.

Fiona Post

She listened dutifully, mostly because while the teacher was odd, he still got points from her for not laughing at her weapon last week. That really went a long way to making Fiona happy in a situation like this.

When it came to picking a weapon, though, she figured out exactly where to go. When you pick up on a theme, you go with it.

Fiona went right for the bows. While the longbow looked a bit intimidating, the crossbow struck her as far too close to a gun for her comfort. As such, she picked up the compound bow.

It took her about four arrows, one bout of having to suck on her fingers, and learning to keep her hair back due to a painful pull.

Then she was a ridiculously good shot.

Gwynn Hood

Well of course Gwynn was using the bows. They were her favorite and best weapons.

"Well!" said Minsc cheerfully. "Now's the time to get trained, then! Here!" He picked up one of the giant lawn darts. "We can start with the easy ones!"

Kenshin took the dart carefully.

"I throw it, right?"

"That's right!" Minsc said cheerfully. "But it's much more than just that. Here!"

He picked up his own dart, turning toward the targets with an expression of concentration and maybe even a little bit of malice. A little bit of malice went a long way where there were targets involved.

He brought the dart back over his head; he held it with one of his large, meaty paws along the shaft ~~not dirty omg~~. "As you come forward with the dart," he said, "you want to release it at exactly the moment it's parallel with ground." He slowly moved his arm forward until it was at just that point. "See? Now!"

And now quickly! Minsc pulled his arm back again, releasing it at the same spot when he brought it forward fast, sending it flying straight as an arror toward one of the targets and managing to sink it into the gut of a gnoll.

It should be noted that this was not at all how lawn darts were supposed to be used. Minsc didn't know that, however, and was pretty much teaching everyone to throw them like fancy-pants javelins (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5wdaSwVeTo), because that's what they were in his eyes.
