Slacking - Last Meeting [Friday, Period 1]

It had been inevitable, really. Week after week of feigning sleep as the students arrived had, given that this was Max, virtually guaranteed that one day he'd actually be asleep. His head didn't loll back, and he didn't snore. In fact, he looked pretty much exactly like he did at the beginning of every class. Except that he didn't have his sunglasses on (they were lying on his desk next to a pack of multi-colored sharpie markers) and his eyes were firmly closed. When the last student arrived he sat up abruptly assuming no one rudely awakens him first and looked around in confusion for a moment. Then he figured out where he was and cleared his throat.

"Today your assignment is simple. Each pair of you has picked a task. Today you'll detail that task and how you plan to accomplish it, at least in broad strokes. But most importantly you'll explain what precautions you've taken to avoid officious interference. What measures are you employing to avoid having to ask anyone permission, which tends to take forever to get, or for avoiding other people taking over and wrecking your project?"

He looked over the students. "I'll call each pair up here and you'll explain things. Then, if you want, you're free to question the pair on details of their plans and suggest situations which might cause problems." He was going to call everyone, whether they were there or not, and if people weren't present or dawdled he was going to scowl. Very menacingly. Except without any menace.

Valentine glanced over at Effy before they were called up, shrugging a little, and wondering if they should swap a few notes first, or just wing it. Their combined apathy would probably do the trick well enough.

Effy shrugged back, in what was probably a 'whatever, let's just get this over with'.

Amazing how she could convey so much, while saying so little.

Yeah, Valentine knew the type. She nodded, and then offered to Max once their turn came around, "Basically? We pick the date and the spot, we let Turtle know what we need, and she sets it up, we hang out to make sure it's right, and then people show up and it's a party."

Basically.

"Island full of do-gooder's," Effy said after a moment. "Shouldn't be too hard to find someone else to do it."

"My brother," Valentine offered; she had been talking to plenty of people that would probably fit the overly nice bill, but Ender was the first one to come to mind. He would be a lot of work to convince, but Max didn't need to know that, "and his friend Ben."

Hannibal didn't have any notes for his project but he figured he and Claire had talked it over enough that it'd be easy to wing it.

They totally had this in the bag.

"You want me to get us going?" Hannibal asked. "I'm a pretty good talker."

"Sure, that sounds good," Claire said. "And I can field any questions we get from our classmates?"

"Hopefully we sew it up so there are none," Hannibal said even if he knew that questions could be found in the most unlikely of places. "Okay, so we're planning a train trip to New York. And we'd talked about doing it during the upcoming July 4th holiday which gives us an easy excuse of going to visit family up there. Unless someone's going to actually ask for the phone numbers of our family, they really can't prove that we're just going up there to have fun."

Hannibal just hoped that he never had a supervisor that went as far as asking for phone numbers because ew.

"And we decided to take a train because it's one of those modes of transportation that people forget still exists. We can make a lot of connections in various cities if we need to and still enjoy a nice few days of sightseeing on the way. I mean, you hear a lot about people getting stopped at the airport but hardly ever on trains, right?"

He looked at his partner and asked, "Anything I'm forgetting?"

"I actually do have relatives in New York, so we're covered on that front," Claire said. "Also, we're planning to keep the trip small. Just the two of us and two guests. Less people involved in the planning and execution of our trip means less chance of someone coming up with a good reason to stop us."

"Right," he said, nodding. "And the guests are pretty close to each of us so it's easy to trust them. And I know my guests is easily bribed so I could pay for her silence."

He was joking! Really!

"We'd also curtail any rowdy behavior so we don't get tossed off the train or out of hotels or anything like that. We'll be well behaved students going to visit relatives for a nice holiday weekend."

Helen was not at all certain about this, but she was here.

As was Fiona.

"Should we get started?"

Helen nodded. "How hard can a beach party be?"

She smiled.

"Well, I have the plans all set, I think."

Helen nodded. "Nothing too complex, but it's all covered thoroughly."
