Rangering!, Friday, Period Five [ 06/12 ].

"Good afternoon, class!" Today, they would find themselves being greeted by their brusque teacher in the usual Danger Shop clearing, although the woods seemed a bit thicker, the rocky bits rockier, and there was the sound of a waterfall and a river off in the distance, which spilled out into the sea. It was all very pretty.

"Today we are working on two very important ranger skills! Tracking, and plant finding!" He started to hand out some papers, which were probably pretty helpful and full of information, but Minsc would not be offended if anyone made paper planes or blew their noses in them...because they had a lot of information on them and reading was hard. "Being able to recognize signs of creatures in the area recently might be a big difference between a successful raid or being eaten by a bear! And knowing the difference between a plant that can a heal and a plant that can give you explosive stomach pains is very good, too! You'd be surprised how similar they make some of those! So please look over the material, ask any questions if you've got them, and I'd like you to pair up, go into the woods, and start tracking! Try to find the lair of a creature or monster hidden in these woods, and then try to locate at least three bad plants and three good plants! When you are done, you may work on your sparring or target practise. Now go!"

It was rather sad altogether that Sir Minsc's class - barring Sir Minsc's attacks of fancy - were the highlight of Arthur's week. Especially now, since tracking was something he did pretty bloody well - it was just that there was no game at all.

He was hence looking rather eager to get to the exercises.

Arthur didn't exactly need a partner, which was why he was already halfway into the woods before he came to a stop - to examine something that looked an awful lot like stag tracks.

"Sir Minsc?"

Arthur had an inquiry, yes.

Reading was hard, yes. Which was why as usual Firekeeper ignored any bits of paper that might have made themselves her way. She also found herself wondering whether Blind Seer counted as a partner or not.

"Is too bad," Firekeeper commented conversationally, "these is not quite real."

"It would make hunting in the preserve a far bit more fun," Arthur agreed, glancing up from his crouch. "Lady Blysse."

Yes, he'd heard the Firekeeper name. Yes, it still seemed too odd to use.

"The sky," he said, promptly, "But that isn't what I'm here to discuss." Arthur paused, for whatever value of pause applicable, and said, "What are your teaching plans for the rest of the summer?"

Not that Sir Minsc had become a very comforting part of Arthur's weekly routine. Or anything.

Tahiri quietly went over the handouts, a little too intent on studying them as thoroughly as possible.

This was so very not the kind of tracking Tahiri was used to, for multiple reasons (mostly related to terrain and technique and, well, entirely different kinds of creatures). She'd give it her best shot anyway.

Which was precisely why she'd never mentioned it. She knew by now there were people who would prefer to use the name the humans had given her, and her impression of Arthur was that he fit rather well into that category.

"Is only so much- pride?" That wasn't quite the right word, the right word started with the hissing-snake sound and was a beat or two longer, but this was close enough, "in hunting rabbit." Not that that would stop her from doing so, mind you. She just missed the thrill of taking down something much bigger than oneself.

Arthur made jokes from time to time, and he would staunchly object to the 'smarmy bastard' moniker. Because he wasn't. "Merely looking into my class schedule for the next semester." You know. Because he did this to all the teachers-- "I thought I'd make the rounds."

All right. Next question... "Does the school allow repeat... classes?"

"Anyone with the right training can land a rabbit," Arthur agreed, rising up to his full height now that he'd gleaned all he could from the tracks. "Stag, or proper deer-- that's game that requires some actual skill."

One of these days, he'd make it off the island and return to the right kind of hunting.
