Magick on the Fly - Thursday, 6/11 - Period Four

"Today's lesson isn't so much a lesson as it is something to think about."

She held up her wand, ebony with silver on either end, its length the same as the distance between the tip of her middle finger and the bend of her arm.

"I'm sure you've seen my wand before today and you will more than likely see my wand after as it tends to make an appearance during the more unfortunate events that occasionally occur on the island. My wand is many things, of course, but most often it is used for the preloaded charm I've placed on it which allows me to freeze an object, or living being, in a suspended state in time and space.

"Quite a trick, hmm? Well, perhaps to some of you. To others, of course, perhaps not so much. Regardless, the concept remains the same: a preloaded spell can be endlessly useful to you for a variety of reasons.

"All the events and troubles we've mentioned before? Well, you can avoid them with a pre-loaded spell. A ring that's set to tell you if poisons entered the air, a bracelet made of charms to provide a shield from harm, a hairclip that will counteract any drugs or spellwork used to muddy your mind to make it clear once more so you can function. These are things that you work on and prepare when you have the time and the energy and use at a moment's warning to assist you. Even if your spellwork is accomplished simply and easily, a preloaded spell can be used to give you warning when you wouldn't be consciously looking or to perform magic in a way that a combatant wouldn't know to look for or guard against.

"So today, I'd like you to try and figure out preloaded spells that could be a part of your daily attire or kept on your person without trouble which would be useful to you. Work with each other and try and point out flaws or specifics that might be ill considered. Try to allow for what you can actually do or think of as possible and start from there. And remember: be practical. Setting something on fire is flashy and impressive but seldom the actual solution to anything."

[ocd up!]

Savannah's list was off to a good start as she thought about the items she wore almost constantly.

1) Pre-load a shielding spell on the promise ring from Johnny
2) Force bolt spell on the wedding ring?

Jack sighed, started writing something, and then raised a hand. Preloaded spells were well and good, but they didn't help someone who didn't do spells to start with. And he hated wasting the hour on pure theory, even if it was his fault for picking the workshop.

"Could I have an alternate activity, Professor Garrett?" He assumed she'd understand his reasoning.

Dōjima was there, but she was frowning down at the blank page that was supposed to be her list.

Even if she could get someone from Fandom to pre-load something for her, she could never use it once she left the island. Just owning something like that would leave her wide-open to attack from both Zaizen and Headquarters, and that was a risk that Dōjima wasn't willing to take.

Dōjima tapped her pencil on the desk again, praying for inspiration.

Nothing.

"Hai, sensei," she answered, wrinkling her nose in defeat. "I can think of lots of things that could be useful, especially here, but nothing I can use, if that makes any sense."

"Part of the problem is that if I got caught with something imbued with a Craft, I'd be in deep trouble," Dōjima replied.

"The office I work with uses a substance that somehow repels Craft, but that's limited," she continued. "Yeah, if a guy tries to TK toss you, you're fine. If he tosses a bench AT you, you still have to dodge the bench."

"I do always carry fire and salt." Having an ex-smoker for a boyfriend had advantages, when she could steal packs of matches off him. "Worst case scenario, I throw the salt in their eyes and run like mad?"

Leda knew the theory behind this sort of thing, but hadn't the first clue as to how to do it. Casting a spell on someone or something yeah, she could do that. But putting a spell into something? Totally at sea.

Still, she listed a few things. Magical earrings that warned of danger maybe?

"Thank you, Professor. I already know my item -- I just got a cell phone for communicating on the island," Jack said, pulling his new BlackBerry out of his bag. (It didn't have any numbers in it, yet, and all the settings were still on the default, but he was waiting for an excuse to show it off even if he wasn't quite sure how it worked yet.)

"I'll think about the rest of it."

His observant eyes were the best weapon he knew against harmful magics, but that wasn't properly an answer. Salt? He was already bending his head over the paper to work on a list.

Alex took a moment to think about the pre-loaded spells and wondered what might be useful. Hmm, she could always pre-load something with the stopping time spell she knew.

Wow, something Diana actually found useful and wouldn't be a pain about. "A shield of some sort would be useful. So would a tracker, but those need to be tied to a person so that would be hard. Something to tell me where Claire is this time and if she needs help." Now if she could do it on paper instead of out loud.

Shield spell? Tony wrote, then started making a list. Learn how to shield. Learn how to put spells in objects. Arra had done that with the glamour on the laptop, so he must have instructions on it somewhere.
