"Memorization! This is the thing that frightens off so many people from acting. It's really not as difficult as people make it out to be. The thing to remember is that memorizing a script is sequential; you have cues and reminders that lead you on from line to line. Things to do, especially for those of you in the play this summer." Sophie held up a color-coded script.

"Outline your lines. Colors help trigger memory. Say them aloud. Most actor's memories work on both visual and audio cues-- and you remember your own voice best. Reciting the lines will help you memorize them. Some people also remember if they copy them over in their own handwriting. Do that if it helps. Memory is helped by physical movement; read the script and walk out the cues." Sophie smiled at them all. "Now! Scenes! Break into the pairs I've designated, and rehearse one of the three scenes I've given you. Switch halfway through, and see how different your performance in one character's role is from your partner's, yes?"

"Yeah," Shilo said, while handing the script to him so he could look it over. "I recognized the title. The Tempest was one of my mother's favorites."

Parker

Parker didn't think memorization was all that difficult though she was better with remembering security and stuff like that than words. But still. Words weren't that hard.

"...right, first time for that excuse," Sophie said thoughtfully, eyeing Shilo with some dubiousness. "And it's quite all right, one tardy won't get you Detention with me. But. A cat?" She stared. "Are you quite all right?" Or are you mental?

Shilo nodded emphatically. "I know, I know, it sounds totally nuts, but I turned into a cat on Thursday, and it wasn't until this morning that I finally changed back," she replied. "My roommate saw me and everything. Not change, I mean, but while I was a cat." And then, as if it would help the situation: "I was a Sphinx. You know, the ones that are all bald?"

"Yes, I'm familiar with them." Which made this all the more surreal. "Very well. I'm going to accept this excuse conditionally. Since I understand these things happen. But I'd like it if you'd memorize a short monologue of your choice for next week? You don't have to perform it for the class, but I'd prefer it." There. That was fair, wasn't it?

"Okay," Shilo replied. "And thank you, ma'am. For being understanding, not for not giving me detention, I mean."

Rachel Roth

Raven looked through the scripts, thinking perhaps the one with the sisters would make the most sense to try with Emma.

"... Hi, Harper," Eric said, sounding nothing so much as vaguely defeated.

Someone, he swore, was laughing at him. Someone, somewhere.

Eric van der Woodsen

"Do you have any preference?" Emma asked as she wandered over. "I'd rather not do Sir John's Downfall, but other than that, I'm open to suggestions."

"Hi Eric," said Harper, grinning. "How'd you like to do this scene from As You Like It? I could be Rosalind and you could be Orlando."

Eric contemplated suggesting that he'd rather stick knitting needles in his eyes, but decided that that would likely be a little bit too harsh.

"Sure," he said, instead. "If you want to."

Savannah Levine

Savannah was reading over Katharina's (http://shakespeare.mit.edu/taming_shrew/taming_shrew.4.3.html) lines as she waited for K-Mart.

"Oh yes! I definitely want to," said Harper, delighted.

Robin

Robin flipped through the scripts and wondered if Serena had any preferences.

Raven showed Emma the script she had. "This one is sisters talking about a suitor, I believe. Is it acceptable?"

"Really?" Sam said, taking note of the way she said was. "That seems like a good choice then. I, uh, suppose I should let you be the girl, huh?"

"Unless you really want to be Miranda," Shilo replied with a small smile. "We may have to do some editing, since there's a third person in this scene."

Emma looked over it quickly, nodding before pulling the matching one out of her bag. "Sounds good," she answered. "It's nice and short, too, which should make the memorizing easier."

"Do you have a preference for which character you would like to start with?" Raven asked.

"Mind if I take Bianca?" Emma asked. It wasn't often she got to be the cute and innocent one, after all.
