Archeology: Tuesday 5/12 - Period Three

"Morning, kids," Indiana greeted his workshop. "For those who don't know me, I'm Dr. Indiana Jones. I'm the librarian here but in another life I was a professor of archeaology at a university. Since this isn't a college level course and since this island tends to veer to the strange, I thought I'd share with you some of the tricks of the trade I've picked up while on various... expeditions."

He waved at everyone in the room. "First off, let's have some introductions."

And once that was through, Indiana waved to a few "Relics" that he had laid out on the table.

"I thought we'd keep things simple this week before we got into anything really complicated. Today we're going to talk about taking care of items you might find while on an excavation. The last thing you want to do is to find an invaluable piece of history and then inadvertantly destroy it while trying to get it to a museum. Especially if you're being chased by Naz- Um. Competitors.

There's also something to be said about one of the more dangerous parts of archeology. And I'm not talking about danger to life and limb... though that does happen from time to time. What I'm talking about is folklore. Myths. And while some of those legends are complete crap, others need to be paid attention too. Stick around this island long enough and you'll learn that there are things beyond this world that we don't understand and sometimes might be best left alone. If you're dealing with an artifact that is the basis of someone's culture and provides life to their land, it's best to leave that artifacts in their hands. If there are warnings about a curse or how far you can take an artifact with you, pay attention. Most importantly? If some nut job starts babbling about talking to God directly? Close your eyes when it happens or run away as fast as you can."

Indiana then handed out some documentation from a leading museum about artifact preservation. "Luckily for you, we're just going to deal with more mundane items. This handout is are general instructions for taking care of some of the objects you see before you. This week I want you to take one of these items for the week, making sure to keep them in good shape and safe until next week. Yep. That simple. Go out and enjoy the rest of your day."

And the artifacts in question are:

* A bronze staff headpiece with an offset crystal
* An old piece of tapestry from India that has two figures. One is giving another figure a set of stones
* A gold cross
* A small gold idol
* A piece of parchment with hieroglyphics on it
* A small jade bottle
* An ornate ceremonial incense burner
* Some coins that appear to be gold
* A weathered bronze goblet
* A porcelain vase

Not only was Jaina not sure how she ended up in this class, much like she didn't know how she had a roommate, or a little brother, or a class on the beach, but last week she'd help send her evil dad-lookalike cousin to a prison for the time being.

She was eying this teacher a lot.

Shilo was dutifully writing notes down, every so often glancing up at the teacher.

Shilo took the piece of parchment and looked it over carefully.

Sam wasn't sure why he was the TA, but TA he was, and he was going to do his best not to spaz out about it. So he'd probably still spaz at you.

Helen chose the small jade bottle.

Sam took the goblet, mainly because it looked less breakable than some of the others.
carsexual: (Oh God why would you do that?)

"What? No," Sam scoffed. "I'm not nervous. I'm totally not nervous, why would you say that? I mean, 'cause I'm not."

Bundle of nerves was kind of his default state of being.
