All right--I need your synopsis papers from Monday. You can turn them into me at my office hours Friday, but those will be late will be marked down.

Let's continue our discussion about timelines...today we're going to focus on the idea of historical events as influential focii (focal points) in creating parallel and alternate universes. What events in your history would you consider to be focal points? Or is every decision you make a focus?


For Monday, look at this article, which synopsises the reasoning for and against the concept of parallel universes. It takes a much more Earth-based scientific view of the subject, but since that's our general cultural mean here, I think you all can analyse its possibilities and flaws fairly well. In 100 words, of course.

I think alternate timelines do exist though I don't know how to access or use them. At this school, for example, there are two students who look alike enough to be twins but differ in the time of the place they come from and their knowledge of Earth culture. Since they are not related in anyway and do not seem to come from this modern day world, alternate timelines seem the best option.

My biggest concern with alternate timelines is that, if I end up in some alternate universe with another John Crichton, will I interrupt the balance of that universe, will I disrupt the thread, and cause harm in that universe?

Since decisions can vary so much in topic, I think one was to vary their focus of history. If I'm making a decision about a car, I can't be thinking about the presidential election of 2004. Every decision is going to have a different focus and, therefore, a different historial idea to relate and compare it to.
