Young Entrepreneurs; Monday, Period 6 [ 04/20 ].

"Okay, guys," Turtle jumped right into business once everyone was collected and had their hands on some coffee and-or baked goods. "Today's our very last meeting. I know. Things really flew by, what with zombies and kids and everything, but, luckily, I've got our kits all put together. So it's up to you, this week and next, to try to sell some of them, and the money will go toward the club next semester. Go ahead and take some before you leave. Other than that, stick around, hang out, or go ahead and take off to go work on exams or whatever. And good luck on those, too! It's been great having everyone in club. It's been a good group!"

Ned had pies, oh yes he did. He couldn't let the last meeting go by without pies. Today, he had three even. Call it celebration. "...Whoa."

Yeah, that summed it up nicely.

"Too much?" Ned asked, wincing.

Turtle immediately snorted. "As if there could be a such a thing as too much pie, Ned. These look awesome!"

"Thanks, I thought last meeting might deserve a little more than usual," he said and smiled. "Cap off a good semester and all."

"Amen!" declared Turtle, reaching for a fork. "Seriously, the day you ever stop making pies is going to be a truly sad day indeed, Ned."

"Let's hope I never lose my hands." Ned winced. "That was morbid of me to say, wasn't it?"

"Just a little," Turtle admitted with a shrug. "But, if anything, maybe, somehow, you could learn how to make pies with your mind."

"With my mind?" Ned repeated. "Like telepathic pies?"

"Do you think telepathic pies might not taste as good as handmade pies?"

Hey, when you were onto an entirely feasible (for here) new business venture, you asked the silly questions like that.

"I think...you know, I don't know," he answered honestly. "I'd assume you'd have all the ingredients and you'd just mix them together with your mind rather than your hands. I can't see it being too different."

"True," mused Turtle, "on one hand. On the other hand, homemade pies usually taste better than machine made pies, but it's all still generally the same prcess."

"There might be more satisfaction with homemade, handmade pies?" Ned tried.

Turtle nodded. "Plus, making them with your mind might take some work, unless there's something you're not telling us, Ned."

And there he was! Pinging in. Like a thing that pings.

"Yeah, I can't bake anything with my mind," he said, snickering. "If I could, I'm sure I'd be a lot more interesting."

"I think you're plenty interesting, Ned," Turtle assured him.

"But I'd have stories to tell if I could make things with my mind." Never mind the things he could do with his finger.

"But, instead, you have stories of things you make with your hands," Turtle proved it by taking a big bite of pie.

"Someone without hands would be very impressed by that," she added, mouth still full of pie.

"Would someone without hands really wanna hear about how awesome my hands are?" Ned wondered.

"I considered that," Turtle admitted. "They'd either be impressed, or they'd want to stab your face. Lucky for you, it's hard to hold a knife if you don't have hands."

"Hopefully they wouldn't have compensated and been able to use their feet to stab me," Ned said, wincing.

"Ooooh," said Turtle. "I didn't think about that. I'll bet they probably could; they would learn to use their feet better to make up for the lack of hands, the same way blind people can hear better than people who can see."

"So, I'd be getting stabbed any which way," he said and laughed. "Ow."

"I think," noted Turtle, "this is the strangest conversation I've ever had that was inspired by pie, Ned."

And she dated Jeff. That was impressive.

"Sorry," he said and laughed again. "I mean, it seemed like a natural tangent when it started."

"Oh, don't apologize," Turtle chuckled a little. "You've still got a long way to go before reaching weirdest conversation ever. But pie...I mean, Jeff and I did talk about the potential dangers of that one you made me for my birthday, but I think handless stabbings trumps that."

"Yeah, that was a big pie," he recalled, nodding. "I thought it was going to fall over or sink or something when I was getting it to your party."

"I think Jeff was actually afraid of it."

Alice Liddell

Alice considered the kits. "May we hatch our own marketing schemes?" she asked.

This would be less unnerving from someone that wasn't Alice.

"...Did you have something particular in mind?" asked Turtle, her curiosity getting the best, perhaps, of the fact that she might not want to know.

On the other hand, it could be brilliant.

"Not exactly," Alice mused. "Though I have some vague ideas. One could hint strongly that one knew evil things were afoot, and it would be best to purchase a kit now. One could sell off raffle tickets for something else entirely, with a free kit per raffle ticket. Or half-off the kit with a raffle ticket, or half-off the raffle ticket with a kit. Buy two, get one free. Complete blackmail immunity with purchase. Or one could sign the kits, declare them to be limited editions, and rave about the low cost. Include a free explosive device with every box."

Turtle blinked a little.

"Okay," she said after a moment. "The first one's not so good. For some people, it might be, though, admittedly, I'm a little reluctant to have a product sell through fear. I, personally, prefer a good feeling to go along with my products. And then you'll always have some people who are all, 'Screw you, I don't need your help, or your kit! I can handle whatever comes my way on my own!' so that's a no sale there. The other stuff I like, for the most part. Blackmail immunity suggests you actually have something to blackmail them with; if you don't, then it's kind of pointless. Free explosives are tricky, too. If one goes off upon opening, helllooooo lawsuit."

"I don't suppose I considered what sort of feeling my products should come with," Alice frowned. "Only that I should like for them to be out of my possession, traded happily for money. By blackmail immunity, I meant against future gremlin bites or embarrassing Fandom-related antics. Though I wouldn't promise not to point and laugh. That might be hard to maintain."

Turtle's head bobbed a little in a nod. "Think about it this way, Alice. This is a product that you're selling to a person. Whenever that person sees that product, or uses it, part of their brain, conscious or not, is going to relate it to you. So, however you get the product out of your possession, traded happily for money, it doesn't hurt to keep that sort of thing in mind."

"You're saying that you shouldn't like for people to think ill of you?" Alice asked, considering the matter.

"Not if you want them buying more things from you in the future," said Turtle.

There was a pause. "And, really, in general, I guess."

"I shall remember that for the economic concerns," Alice nodded. "Though I care less about people in general. Most assume I'm mad; assuming I'm mad and unpleasant would at least carry a profit."

"...to an extent," said Turtle, after a moment. "I mean, most people don't want to go among mad people."

"Oh, but you can't help that," Alice grinned, her voice a low purr. "We're all mad here."

Turtle took a moment to consider this and realized that she couldn't really argue. "....Good point."
