American History, Period 2 04/09

"Jinkies guys!" Tony Velma said, adjusting what looked like a pair of glasses he found on his way over to the classroom. "We've got a mystery on our hands!"

"Oh, gee," Nathan Daphne added, throwing in something that may or may not have been a swoon as he weaved closer to ... Tyler. "What should we investigate first? The old, haunted mansion? Maybe we should talk to the gardener to find out if he's seen anything!"

Because the creepy gardeners always had the best clues. Really.

"Zoinks!" said Steve Shaggy.

"We're trying to solve the mysterious break-in at the Watergate Hotel!" Tyler Fred explained, then adjusted his neckerchief self-importantly.

It was a very impressive neckerchief.

"But we need help from all of you, junior detectives! We've printed out this list of clues and it's up to you to help us put them together." He winked at the class, then lowered his voice to confide, "Some people say this mess goes all the way up to President Nixon!"

"Fred, don't you start on that crackpot theory," Velma said, hands on her hips. The sweater really made her look terribly feminine when she did that. Not at all like a football player. Or a really butch woman. "I heard there was hidden treasure beneath the Watergate hotel. Old doubloons from Blackbeard's day!"

"Wouldn't it be wonderful if-" And that would be where Daphne cut off her musings for a long, high-pitched scream. Nathan was doing an awful lot of those, lately. "Ghost!"

He was pointing at thin air. Clearly, the most terrifying ghost ever was right there. If you didn't see it, you weren't looking hard enough, kids.

"Oh, no!" Shaggy said, cringing away from a very scary patch of nothing. "Keep it away from me!"

"Stay calm. No one's going to get hurt while I'm here!" Fred ordered. "That ghost is just a sheet on a fishing line to scare us away from us finding out who stole the treasure. Well, we won't be scared away, even if it was President Nixon."

"Fred's right!" Because Fred was always right.

Velma marched toward the students to unmask this intruder, going to pull the obvious mask off to reveal them and their fiendish plans. "We know it's you... Richard Nixon!"

Sadly the mask wasn't actually a mask. And the student in question was now rubbing his chin. "Hey!" Teddy said, trying to get away from the crazy Tony Stark.

"And it looks like another mystery has been solved!" Daphne was all but jumping up and down in glee, really. Mostly, she was just waiting for Richard Nixon to say something like, 'And I would have gotten away with it, too, if not for those meddling kids and their dog!'

"Zoinks!" Shaggy said again. Then he looked around. "Hey, where's Scooby? I bet he'd really like some of these Scooby Snacks." There were no Scooby Snacks.

"Scooby was investigating the kitchen," Fred said, a trace of weariness creeping into his jaunty voice. Scooby always wanted to investigate the kitchen. "Velma, Shaggy, why don't you go find him and fuel up the Mystery Van for our next case while Daphne and I interview witnesses here?"

They were probably just going to make out -- or they would, if it wasn't for these meddling kids.

Velma knew what they were doing. They were going to solve the case without her! Letting go of the Richard Nixon impostor, she went to stand by Shaggy. "C'mon, Shaggy. I'm sure there are some in the van."

"Uh, okay," Shaggy said. He was confused about who or what was supposed to be in the van, but that wasn't unusual. Shaggy was confused about everything. "You guys catch up."

Buffy was left with staring. Occasionally there was blinking, but mostly, staring.

Mostly, though, Ino was giggling her fool head off as she tried to explain to Weechee that this was, uh, what a class was and wasn't it exciting, yes it was!

You'd think this would make Katchoo feel better about her gremlin bite yesterday, right?

Please. This was Katchoo. She didn't even have to try to find a way to use it as more justification to be pissy about yesterday.

Anemone really wasn't sure what was going on, so she just stared along with the rest of the class.

"Yes," Alice decided. "I've done something horribly wrong. Only I shouldn't like to tell you outright. It should be dragged out of me, slowly."

She glanced between the two. "If you're not busy, that is."
