Literature, Class 12: Period 3, Thursday, April 2

Miss Elizabeth Bennet looked more alert, perhaps, than her usual as she stood in front of the class Thursday morning. Not that Miss Bennet was ever inattentive; far from it. However, today she was taking especial care to count the number of students in her class, frown at the doorway, and pace.

It was perhaps best not to ask where she had found that rather large axe that was lying across her desk.

"Today, you've a very important assignment," Miss Bennet said sharply. "And that is to stay alive. I insist that every one of you arrive back here next week whole and hearty and particularly - I must stress this - not in a state of zombification.

"Today's lesson has been postponed," she continued, "as I doubt any of us could focus properly on the translation concerns of Dante's Inferno when we're under a serious attack. Literature can be useful in these situations, as escapism from dwelling too much on a difficult situation. However, such should only be attempted after one has ensured that one is completely safe, and prepared for the worst.

"I wish to hear from each of you. You will relate -- to myself and the rest of class -- your plan for continuing as a live human for the next few days. I do not expect acts of great courage. Certainly, if you are experienced at protecting others, and should like to assist in defending the island, I would not presume to stop you, though I would encourage you strongly to take every precaution necessary. Travel with others, be sure that you have sufficient ammunition for firearms, do not overestimate your own abilities. Further, there is no shame in finding a safe location and staying barricaded within it for the duration of this invasion. Not all of us are fighters, nor should we be. Do what you feel is necessary to ensure your own protection.

"After you have shared your personal plan for surviving this attack, you have several choices. For one, you are perfectly free to stay here and converse with your classmates. I encourage you to make plans together for your joint security. For another, I have brought books today." She nodded at a table near the doorway. "If you should like to stay here and read, you may do so. Or you are free to take a few books with you, if you intend to be hiding somewhere safe and need something with which to pass the time. Lastly, you are free to go, if that is what you choose. I pray that you will all be careful."

The usual rules apply. More so today, as Miss Bennet insists that you listen carefully.

Please relate to Miss Bennet how you intend to stay alive during this invasion. If you do not know, you may ask for suggestions. Hiding is not a sign of cowardice; it is having the intelligence to leave the fighting to those more capable.

Here, you may talk as freely with your classmates as you should like. This will probably not happen again in Miss Bennet's class, so take full advantage.

There is a ~~moddable~~ selection, and it is quite thorough. Miss Bennet is a voracious reader, and has been researching literature since last September. On the table you will find everything from classics to recent best-sellers, in nearly every genre.

You are free to take a book (or two, or three) if you should like to do so. Miss Bennet would prefer that all books be returned by next week. Considering the circumstances, if you should misplace the book or damage it irrecoverably, she will be quite understanding.

Ronan Nolan

"I'm not bad with a sword," Ronan said, when it came his turn, "or a spear, if it comes to that, but most importantly I can defend myself -- and others -- with wizardry."

He snapped his fingers, shorthand now for the spell to call fire; a small flame, not unlike that of a cigarette lighter although a bit larger, rose from his hand. The light from it reflected oddly in his eyes. "If nothing else, I'm certain they'll burn."

Angela Montenegro

Harper Finkle

"I brought my knitting needles," said Harper, holding up a set of aluminum needles in size 15. "They don't let you take them on an airplane so I think they'll work as a weapon. But just to be on the safe side, I'll stick with other people."

Warren Peace

Angela's rough night of sleep and a conversation with Penelope left her in a less than perfect state for class, a little red eyed and a lot tired.

She was there, though, and she thought that considering everything going on, that was quite an achievement.

Lee Adama

Having missed the zombies last night, Lee was still getting caught up on what he'd missed and he was kind of freaked out.

"I'm not going out there again," Angela said decisively.

"I should hope they would," Miss Bennet said, nodding carefully. "I will ask that you please be as cautious as is reasonable."

Agnes Nitt

Ronan nodded. It was entirely possible that his definition of 'reasonable' was drastically different from Miss Bennet's.

"I'll be fine," he said. "I can make shields, too."

"I intend to stay as far away from the zombies as possible," Agnes replied.

"Barring that, I shall defend myself as well as I am able." She indicated the stout tree branch she'd been using as a walking stick.

Angela didn't quite want to head back outside yet, so she picked through the books for anything very definitely not of the horror genre.

"Both parts of that plan seem wise," Miss Bennet agreed. "I wish you luck. Travel by daylight, where possible."

Miss Bennet nodded quite solemnly. "A wise decision," she said. "Have you more classes this week? I would be willing to speak to your professors, on your behalf, to excuse the absence."

"You seemed quite capable last night," Miss Bennet agreed calmly. "Though I would advise you to exercise caution, and limit your journeys to those which are absolutely necessary."

"One," Angela replied. "I think if people didn't show... it would be understandable."

"With a gun and a good place to hide," Lee decided. "A really good place to hide. And maybe a bigger friend to hide behind."

Sam Winchester

"My brother and I have been trained to fight these sorts of things," Sam said. "We'll probably be out patrolling and if anyone absolutely needs to go into town for something, we might be escorts too."

Bender

I'll carry spare brains in a bucket when I go out," said Bender, thinking out loud. "To use as a distraction from anyone gnawing on my head."

Katina Choovanski

"That's just because you didn't see the parts where I was running through the streets in terror," Agnes informed her. "I always seem 'capable' -- its one of my curses in life."

"I would imagine so," she agreed. "Which professor, if I may ask?"

She would totally take responsibility, if the other teacher got upset about absences. And possibly use some very strong words about protecting the student body in times of crisis.

"I shouldn't imagine that to be a curse," Miss Bennet said calmly. "If it means you keep a cool head while others panic, I should imagine it to be a source of strength."

"I wish you luck," she said sincerely. "And a very large friend who carries very large weapons, and sufficient ammunition that you have no need to use."

"I pray that you will stay as safe as you can," she said solemnly. "I mean no disparagement towards your skills, obviously. Having trained guards to escort other students would be a blessing, and it is generous of you to offer your services."

That ... had ... not been one of the responses she had anticipated.

Having said that, it did seem to be pragmatic, provided one did not think too long on where the spare brain might have originated.

"Are you not concerned that the ... spare brains might instead lure them in?" she asked.

There were sentences one never expected to say ....

"It means that I don't GET to panic," Agnes grumbled. "Everyone just assumes I can cope, so I'm stuck having to."

"Professor Dex," she replied. "He... strikes me as the type to be able to keep us protected, at least?"

Inara Serra

Inara listened to the lecture wide-eyed, somehow having managed to have miss most of what was going on up until that point.

Inara considered. "I'll stay inside and away from them, if I am able. I'd like to offer my help in case there are injuries, but I'm unsure if I'll be able to get to the clinic."

Perhaps a second location.

Jill McTeague

Jill had just thought there was a zombie walk on...

"It's just a zombie walk, right?" Jill asked disbelievingly. "Everybody'll take off their makeup and be back to normal tomorrow."

"We'll be safe, I promise," Sam said. "I'd hate to have to miss next week's class, after all."
