So You Want to Make a TV Show- 2nd Period- Class #12

Having handwavily sent an E-mail to the class telling them to meet in the Danger Shop today, the place was set up much like a television studio. A real one, not just something Dana had thrown together in her classroom.

"Okay," said Dana when class began. "'The best laid plans of mice and men oft go awry.' You've probably heard it, and it's true. You can plan an plan and plan something, and at the last second, it's guaranteed to go wrong. For this, we blame a guy named Murphy, and his stupid Law: whatever can go wrong, will. Or sometimes we blame Thespis. Don't ask. And what do you do when something goes wrong? You deal with it," she said. "When you're working in an environment like this, you can't have something bad happen and shrug and go 'oh well.' It might require a super quick fix. Do you cover for it, do you acknowledge the mistake, do you smile and nod and pretend it never happened? Tehe truth is, there is no right answer. You just have to know how to roll with the punches and go with it somehow, because you just have to get through it and then it's over and you can laugh about it later, or go out for a lot of drinks later if it was really bad. I didn't just say that to a high school class and anyone who says I did is lying.

"Today you're going to get a scenario. You may be the director, you may be an anchor, it'll depend on each one. You're right at showtime, and you have to solve the problem. Just show me what you do to get out of it," she said. "Now get to it."

[And a note, class, please check out this post for info on next week's class.]

Re: During the lecture

[identity profile] decoder-rings.livejournal.com 2009-03-30 11:49 am (UTC)(link)
Hannibal thought he'd do okay with this class. He was pretty damn good at improvising when things sort of went pear shaped.

Re: Scenario #1

[identity profile] decoder-rings.livejournal.com 2009-03-30 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
"Collins is expected to miss practice this week, the result of a bulging dic," Hannibal read, already formulating his plan of action. He paused for a moment, letting that sink in before saying, "And while that particular malady sounds painful, it's probably more suited for channels people have to pay extra for. That should actually be bulging disc and I'm sure Mr. Collins is much happier with a bulging disc than the other thing. Ow."

He winced dramatically.

"We wish Mr. Collins a speedy recovery!"

Well, he tried.

Considering her normal tasks, Adora finally felt confident about something in this class.

Claire figured she was good at improvising. She could rock this.

Re: Scenario #2

[identity profile] swipedthatfoot.livejournal.com 2009-03-30 01:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. That was kind of cool, but probably not in the middle of a live broadcast.

Claire opened her mouth in surprise and gestured to the anchor guy who wasn't Nate. "Get it off the desk!" she whisper-shouted at him, hoping he'd be able to think of something to say that would cover and let the broadcast get back on track. "Make a joke!"

Dinah Lance

Re: Scenario #3

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-03-30 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"Whoooops." Dinah grabbed the pages, and scribbled a line about, "And in a stunning upset, the Lakers have lost in overtime, 122 to 120," in bright red so it couldn't be missed, then frantically looked around. She sent the right script to the teleprompter, then went behind the camera, signaling to the anchors that there were new pages.

Aaand... okay, below sight-line, she crawled over behind the desk, handed off the script-pages to the guy with the nose, and crawled out of sight, trusting the camera guys to not film her.

Okay, this would be-- fun? Well. At least it wasn't life-or-death, hopefully.

And speaking of broadcasts, Dinah might be shooting Turtle exasperated looks at differing intervals.

Re: Scenario #3

[identity profile] armybrat-lois.livejournal.com 2009-03-30 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Lois thought this was pretty simple. Run up behind camera, take in a deep breath and--

"YO! LAKERS LOST!"

There we go.

Re: Scenario #3

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-03-30 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Dinah stared, then cracked up. Yeah, that worked.

"Collins is expected to miss practice this week, the result of a bulging dic," he read and managed not to say "oshit" immediately after. "Collins would be expected for next week as soon as the S is back in the disc."

Well, this was something Robin could relate to. "If only that'd happened on camera." he muuttered. "Toss it here!" he yelled to the anchor. The realized as it was coming towards him that it was slightly bigger than he was.

Directing stuff or presenting information in a media form, eh?

Snorting slightly with amusement, Turtle just relaxed. She had plenty of experience in either of those, really.

Re: During the lecture

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-03-31 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Dinah slid a note over when she was sure Ms. Whitaker wasn't watching.

Rolled up newspaper??? What!

Re: During the lecture

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2009-03-31 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Turtle, carefully, took the notes with the best of her ninja abilities, taking a peek and then lifting a very o rly? eyebrow at Dinah.

She stealthily scribbled something back.

Yes. Because do you know what else you hit on the nose with rolled-up newspapers when they misbehave? Dogs. Because some boys are just like dogs, Dinah. Drooling dogs that will hump any leg that stays still long enough.

Re: During the lecture

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-03-31 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Dinah headdesked, then pounded her head, and wrote back:

Open relationship! I checked! He told me so, but I checked! Then a moment to add: I know it's a little weird. That's his planet, though.

Re: During the lecture

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2009-03-31 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Turtle tried not to wince at the sudden headdesking, because that would just draw attention to them.

Open relationship, his planet. Doesn't matter. Still leg-humping, drooling, whatever. Guess it's cool if you're into it, too, but I wouldn't compromise my own feelings for someone else's. Not to assume on your feelings, of course. If you're cool with that, that's your prerogative.

Yes. Turtle was very, very....opinionated about this topic.

Re: During the lecture

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-03-31 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
OOooooo. Ooo!

Not compromising! Just trying to figure it out! Haven't done this before!

And wow, did Dinah regret writing that two seconds after giving it to Turtle.

Re: During the lecture

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2009-03-31 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
The look that flashed across Turtle's face was almost murderous, like the rolled-up newspaper from last night had just been upgraded to a crowbar with the leverage part facing forward.

Good rule of thumb, her response advised, figure things out before you do them, not jump headfirst into things and just hope you're okay with it.

Re: During the lecture

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-03-31 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Dinah's head went down on the desk again, although Turtle could probably see the neon-red blush had intensified.

She scribbled over what she'd written before so no one else could read it, and wrote down: AM. Working on it. Nothing more 'til I know. After a minute, she wrote: Alice is fine, really. She's okay with all this.

Because yeah, Alice was the one to worry about.

Re: During the lecture

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2009-03-31 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
If you're working on it, Turtle wrote back, realizing that hiding the fact that they were passing notes was now impossible, since her anger was clearly written all over her face, her anger and her annoyance over how girls could be SO STUPID, then you're not okay with it. And who cares if Alice is? Good for her. Hope she's really happy with compromising herself just because a guy has a killer smile and eyes that make your insides go all mushy like oatmeal. But, like I said, if you are, too, good for you, that's your choice, I guess.

Re: During the lecture

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-03-31 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
And that one had Dinah ripping up the note into pieces, and then shoving it into her purse to burn later, not looking at Turtle, facing like a stoplight.

Re: During the lecture

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2009-03-31 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
And Turtle tried to let that held breath out very slowly and subtly. She wasn't going to feel bad, especially since Dinah getting to the point of ripping up the note was a pretty good sign that Turtle was probably right and Dinah was just being stubborn and a stupid girl.

She started it anyway.

"Collins is expected to miss practice this week, the result of a bulging dic." Jenny looked straight into the camera and said, "Collins, call me, unless there's actually an s missing from my prompter, as seems likely, in which case we wish you a speedy recovery."
